damn good album. overly hated for sure, seen on the near bottom of many primus ranking lists. the highs outweigh the lows in many examples. it's not my turn to go over the falls.

At this point in their careers, the guys from Primus had made themselves a living off of quirky, funky, experimental rock with a penchant for dark humor and awesome bass lines. Brown Album is a weird album for Primus in the sense that it's really not that weird; it was certainly the most streamlined and toned-down album the band had released at the time, and while diehard fans of albums like Frizzle Fry met this change with animosity, it's still a very solid and entertaining record. Most every song here is an exercise in hooky, tightened-up funk rock, with some really nice riffs and fun bass lines in abundance. The absence of the more dynamic and intricate drumming that albums like Pork Soda had does harm things a bit, but it makes sense that the drumming becomes more tighter as the sound becomes more conventional, so it's really only a minor gripe. Though it isn't an album that is truly indicative of who Primus really are, Brown Album still has some fine tunes on it that a fan of funk rock with a slight strangeness to it will enjoy very much.

I know I'm in a minority, but here me out. It has become very popular to tear this album to pieces, and generally the public interest in Primus dropped almost entirely from this point foward. And what can I say - probably my favorite amongst their albums. So many psychedelic funk moments, where do I begin? The groovy "Golden Boy", "Over the Falls" and "Shake Hands with Beef" that complete an impossible opening sequence, "Kalamazoo ", "Dutches and..." and more. There is a reason that Claypool might be the most influential bassit in the world of rock - second only to his mentor, Geddy Lee of Rush. That reason is written all over this album.
