| 3.0 good | TheyTookOurJobs | January 22nd 09 | an ok compilation from one of the leading pop punk bands of the nineties.
what was good:
they included 'all i want', 'come out and play', 'self esteem', 'cant get my head around you', 'kids arent alright' and rare b-side 'cant repeat'.
what was bad:
the discluding of any tracks of the first two albums. i guess it sort of says it in the title but, it would be much better if it was more of a 'greatest songs' compilation, hand picked songs from the actual band, not the singles chart and/or their (major) record label.
summery:
dont start with this if you are just getting into the band. instead just get a full release, so you can see the good un- mainstream songs. if you really want to avoid the mainstream, go to their first two albums.
i have no problems with the songs whatsoever, i just think they could have picked more wisely.
the main reason why i didnt give this album a higher rating is because there is no fast songs exept for 'all i want'.

| 3.0 good | unlearnme | February 7th 07 | Americana was my first ever album (on tape, to top it off), so, 8 years later, I had to pick this up. But I have to agree with all the nay-sayers: this is just a money pump. We seem to forget that the term "Greatest Hits" does not mean best songs. They're all singles (and is still missing a chunk of them). C'mon, I owned only 1 ablum of theirs and still somehow managed to hear every track on this disc via MTV or radio before even picking it up.
The pre-America tracks are still gems, the best being "Gone Away," and I'll give "Defy You" some props. On the DVD side, the studio acoustic of "Dirty Magic" is a great song (should just be on the damn CD).
But the 'they-were-cool-in-Jr. High' tracks (the Americana tracks) do not refect The Offspring accurately, or positively. Even "Have You Ever" was a better song than all of those. The absence of "Million Miles Away" bothers me, as the space was filled by 2 "yeah, ok" Conspiracy of One tracks. "Hit That" is my guilty pleasure...
If you want a real Greatest Hits album, you'll have to splice pieces your albums and burn your own, 'cause this isn't it.

| 5.0 classic | J_hab | October 23rd 06 | Who doesn't love a greatest hits cd? Not to mention the pre-release of a new song (Can't Repeat) off their new unreleased cd. I honestly feel that they could've made it longer and that they had left out a lot of their best stuff...after all, a "Greatest Hits" cd should have all of a bands GREATEST hits

| 4.0 excellent | heyholetsgohome | June 20th 15 | A widely ignored rule is that punk is supposed to be poppy, a push back against the highly formulated music of the early 70's or late 80's, the Bostons, Journeys, Rushes of the world. The original mid-seventies punk band, the Ramones, were trying to harken back to the early Beatles, at least with their early records. Ironically, the genre which we call pop-punk, with Green Day and the like, has evolved into a style even more complex than original punk. And, this makes some great albums. Eventually, however, one needs a dose of true youthfulness from punk. The Offspring, a singles band if there ever was one, provide just that with this extremely jammable album. Lyrical topics on here range from false assumptions about one's coolness ("they didn't have Ice Cube so he got Vanilla Ice"), foolish violence ("if you're under 18 you won't be doing any time"), or genuine anger ("how could one little street swallow so many lives?"). The Offspring, on every one of their hits, bring back instrumental simplicity as well. We see the buzzsaw strumming popularized by Johnny Ramone, the newer pop-punk power chords as in The Kids Aren't Alright, and relentless ever-poppy chord progressions. There are several mainstays of punk then and now, such as megaphone-like vocal distortion on Can't Repeat and Why Don't You Get A Job?, picked bass on 8th notes, (see: every early Ramones song), and even some hardcore-punk sounding guitar, proving the Offspring a unifying punk band. If I have one big qualm with this album, however, it's the song lengths. Offspring songs are made to be under 3 minutes long, and only maybe 4 songs accomplish that, with my 2 favorites, The Kids Aren't Alright and All I Want, clocking in at under 3 and under 2 minutes. However, most go on with unnecessary codas, solos, bridges, and other nonsense, extending the length to over 3:30. However, that's the direction punk is headed, so I'll take the good with the bad and call this a great pop album.

| 3.0 good | MS2k | March 14th 15 | It's a very short album with all the radio hits you know and love and a handful you may have forgotten. In the decade since publication, The Offspring have produced only one other song that might merit inclusion on a Greatest Hits comp., which makes this nigh definitive. Everything's fast and catchy and powerful pop punk, and except for a couple tracks ("Pretty Fly..." and "Why Don't You Get a Job?") the songs all sound very similar. Not the greatest repertoire, but hey, it is what it is.

| 4.0 excellent | DylanDoorsfan | November 13th 07 | While to most people this is just anouther "Greatest Hits" album, for me this album stands apart from all the others i have picked up,because its the first album i ever brought(i got into music very late-at 18!)Now a few years later, the album still sounds great, with great catchy songs like Self Esteem,Come out and play (Keep Em Separted) and Why dont you get a job.If you like 90s-now US Punk (ie: Pennywise),then you should really like this.

| 4.5 superb | damonbob | July 27th 07 | This album gives us so many of the hits I remember listening to in the 90's. Not much memerable things came out of the 90's but the Offspring I belive is one of them because of some of their unforgetable lyrics and upbeat melody. Sure their are a few songs I wish they put on the album and didn't but I still think it is a great CD! I also believe it could have been a double CD album because they had so many great songs and that is the main reason I gave it 4.5 out of five. The songs on the CD are great but they lose .5 for the absence of other great songs they came out with.
