Recipe for Hate was Bad Religion's last album on an indy label (at least in the 90's), and it shows the band's desire to head in a more experimental-pop type style. As a result, the record is hit or miss, with some songs and instrumental sections coming off as goofy or not fully fleshed out. They are able to pull off some of the slower songs, with great melodies and hooks, along with a more reserved approach to the sonics. The lyrics are still dealing with social issues, and while Greg may not be spitting at 1000 words per minute (except on Modern Day Catastrophist), his words have more power, as there are obviously clearer. There is plenty of filler here, not bad songs necessarily, but not up to BR's standards. Best tracks are the title track, American Jesus, Portrait of Authority, Watch it Die, Struck a Nerve and Skyscraper.
