I'm not sure where all the hate for this album comes from. Is it that its not as thrashy as the old stuff? That there are ballads? That they express their political opinion? IMO for the most part its quite decent Nu Metal with groove influences reminiscent of Slipknot and here and there some experiments. I somewhat enjoyed the record, although I found the ballad songs like 'Bastards' at first a little irritating. I wasn't expecting this, but okay... it reminded me of Rise Against, which isn't necessarily bad (depending on your taste). Also the record doesn't feel very cohesive, its more like a lot of different song ideas thrown into one album. And what may put off a lot of fans are the lyrics, which are partly more political, partly more "gangster rap"-ish and partly just bad. But apart from that, Machine Head did a decent job. The production quality is excellent and the music is quite well written and executed. Especially the songs 'Volatile' and 'Kaleidoscope' stood out to me. In the end I find this release pretty fine. It's not groundbreaking, but it isn't as bad as many say.

Some great song writing on this one, 'Behind A Mask' is a great example, 'Screaming at the Sun' is another one. Great variation as well. Yes its a departure but I'm really digging it.

"Beyond the Pale" is decent track off this album, and definitely helped propel it up half a mark for me. The rest of the album is largely forgettable and a few songs are just plain right awful, "Behind a Mask" is a nice introspective song and shows Machine Head are getting better at writing the slower and softer songs.
