basically Glassjaw doing their best Mind Over Matter /
Stillsuit / VOD / Silent Majority impression via Revelation
Records / 90's L.I. post-hardcore, and it rules.

Holy shit... Material Control finally surfaces and it's unlike pretty much anything else released this year... or ever, except maybe their own back catalogue, but even that is unjustly pigeonholing it. Weird, groovy, heavy, and impeccably mixed and mastered, Glassjaw deliver their long awaited third full length, taking the form of the unholy fusion of their entire body of work. This album meshes the seductive groove of Coloring Book, the vitriolic heaviness of Our Color Green and EYEWTKAS, and it's all punctuated with a healthy dash of the proggy, out-there songwriting that made Worship and Tribute a stone cold classic. Material Control stands as a completely worthy addition to the Glassjaw canon, and serves as a shining example of how to come back from a long studio silence with a massive bang.

I'd be lying if I said this was a strong release of theirs. It's pretty good in the scope of 2017, but compared to Glassjaw's previous EPs? Nah. Some of the experimentation here isn't going to pay off in the long run. Regardless, we got some strong tracks out of it, so it's worth the listen.

For those of you who actually dig this, I'm seriously praying fro you. Because this record is bad. Seriously bad. The vocalist can't find a proper footing in any of the songs, riffs are a borefest, production clips left and right every so often, and the drum rhythms are nothing special. Seriously guys get over yourselves.

I would have preferred something that continued from where Coloring Book left off. Of all their albums, that one is easily my favorite? but Material Control is definitely no let down. Whereas Coloring Book was a grooving, Deftones-inspired release, Material Control is a rhythmic monster of noise, feedback, and formless waves of distortion that somehow comes together to make songs. The best way describe almost every aspect of this album is abstract. Save a few conventional riffs, most of the music, beats, and rhythms almost feel? well, abstract and formless.

Material Control feels like Glassjaw touching on various aspects of their entire discography. First 4 tracks would feel right at home on ?Our Color Green? or ?Worship & Tribute?. Strange Hours and Bastille Day would fit perfectly on ?The Coloring Book?. From Pompeii and Bibleland 6 feels like ?EYEWTKAS?. Closer and My Conscience Weighs a Ton brings it back to ?Worship & Tribute?. In typical Glassjaw fashion, your first impressions of their albums never match how you feel about it after numerous listens, and you give it time to digest. The quicker an album sticks to you, the quicker it?ll fall off. Material Control definitely be in my rotation for awhile.

Definitely not as varied or subtle as Worship rand Tribute, but an entire other kind of beast rin its own right. While it seems Material rControl would rather bludgeon you with thick rbase lines and chunky riffs, there is a nuance rto it all that will probably reveal itself rmore after several listens. The 4 opening rtracks are absolute standouts along with rPompeii. Closer is well, one of their worst rsongs. Album closer Cut and Run definitely rlives up to the title, ending the album on an rabrupt note. One thing I noticed, this album ris missing the calmer influence of Todd rWeinstock. Upon first listen, it seems some of rthese tracks just want to pound you in the rface with noise. Todd brought a certain rrestraint to their sound that is kind of rmissing. Production is mostly perfect, save rfor some tracks burying the vocals. A mostly rsuccessful comeback record.
