The Midnight Organ Fight is a beautifully crafted album. Emotional, raw and supremely addictive, Frightened Rabbit succeed in mixing folk-pop and indie-rock into 48 minutes of bouncy and heartwarming melodies that lift you up, beat you down and, in a final twist, bring you closure and peace. Thoughtful and care-free at the same time, this is one of 2008's best albums, and in a fair world would see Frightened Rabbit catapulted to the mainstream fame they deserve.

Frightened Rabbit's sophomore release The Midnight Organ Fight, is quite frankly one of the most captivating and uniformly crafted albums in recent memory. While never trying to be anything more than a heartfelt collection of songs, the lyricism reveals the struggles of a distressed and yet, very relatable man. The record offers instant accessibility, but is the type that contains those hidden gems that are only revealed through careful repeated listens. The feeling in listening to The Midnight Organ Fight is nothing short of magnificient, whether it is the infectious Scottish accent of lead singer Scott Hutchinson or the heartwarming sensation of Head Rolls Off. The album manages to be uplifting and disheartening all at the same time, while disclosing some of the most brutally honest lyricism that has graced music.

First listens mean a lot- and I haven't felt this way towards an album on first listen since In The Aeroplane Over the Sea or Elliott Smith's s/t. From the danceable and lively "The Modern Leper" to the more subdued "My Backwards Walk." The songwriting is superb and conveys emotion beautifully, even on tracks that top a little over a minute like "Who'd Kill You Now?" Granted, I discovered this a little more than 5 hours ago and have only been through it three complete times, I've already begun to feel its' lasting effect. I have no doubt this rating will bump up in the near future.

Frightened Rabbit's seminal album you really either have had to be there for upon its release or be deep in the specifics of its mood to appreciate. I am often inching myself towards the mood, but never enough to fully embrace the palette.

"The Midnight Organ Fight" is literally a perfect album if there ever was one. The only possible criticism of this is that Scott Hutchinson was simply too good at writing brilliant melodies and depressing lyrics, so maybe it might be a little too cathartic for the weak willed to listen to such an intense and tear jerking album. What's remarkable about this one is the fact that, across 14 songs and two instrumentals, there is no filler. I enjoy pretty much everything Frightened Rabbit put into this album. It feels suffocated, sincere and gloomy at times but it's still somehow one of the catchiest and immediate albums I've ever listened to. "Keep Yourself Warm", "The Modern Leper" and "Heads Roll Off" are without a doubt some of the most powerful songs I've ever heard in my entire life. This album is pretty much flawless, if a little too honest and upsetting for some. Hutchinson's documentation of personal anguish, depression and fall from grace combined with his incredible vocals, swooning melodies and pop sensibilities make for one of the most perfectly executed folk-rock albums in existence.

A wonderful, sincere and quite brilliant album. Hutchison delivers in such a way that you can really appreciate where his head was at when writing this record. The lyrics' honesty shines through, while the music is often bleak and simple yet so infectious and uplifting. If you've ever been through a bitter break up, listen to this album.
