The debut eponymous record by Yes is a better than average late 60s offering showing hints of progressive rock laced with psychedelia and blues. It is a fun and rather relaxed affair, at times demonstrating overdubbed Jon Anderson vocals and harmonies including Squire and Banks. Obviously the best of Yes arrives later however it would be a mistake to bypass their first studio effort altogether.

Great debut that shows that Yes had already begun established a unique identity, even when interpreting the work of others (on 3 songs here). Love Chris Squire's very in-your-face bass tone and style. An interesting amalgam of folk, jazz, pop and progressive rock sensibilities. My favorites here are "Beyond and Before", "Looking Around" and "Survival". A strong start even before the arrival of the other virtuoso's (Howe and Wakeman).

Yes having been formed by Squire and Anderson as a result of their shared passion for the vocal
harmonies of Simon & Garfunkel and the blend of various musical influences, it is understandable
that this debut album appears as a sort of sonic amalgam and an oscillating search of identity.
With songs like the surprisingly jazzy and sufficiently excellent I See You, the powerful and
charming Before & Beyond and the sublime Everydays, we often find ourselves much closer to the
psychedelic movement than to the progressive scene that was still barely entering the dawn of its
development at the time. And that psychedelic pop twist is a rather interesting one, as Yes offer
us their own - and quite interesting - approach to the genre. Indeed, in this record are hiding
many wonderful 60s pop jewels, which, although sadly lacking proper production, are perfectly
authentic and beautifully built. Of course, it has mainly nothing to do with the brilliance they
would later spawn, and probably covers a bit too much ground for its own good, but it makes for
such a fun, refreshing and lovely listen.

The album starts off decent enough, but eventually slips into territory that is neither very memorable, nor interesting in the moment. Many compare this album to Pink Floyd's Piper, but at least Pink Floyd (imvho) could make their debut interesting and in my eyes was a milestone for the group. This one...not so much

Not the best of debuts and definitely not YES's best album. Yet it has something about it that makes you embrace it. Is it it's innocence? Is it the music paths it explores? Is it the proficiency and technical capabilities of it's members? Whatever that is, it put YES on the map
