4.5 superb | Lucman | June 16th 20 | Stranger In The Alps has been a slow burn for me. That isn't to say there was a time I didn't like it, quite the contrary. But it was the kind of record I took for granted, all too content to call it a memorable note in an oversaturated genre. And because of that I missed it. I missed the warmth and the familial intimacy among its snowcapped landscape and towering mountain peaks. Now, I have nothing but a profound appreciation and love for it.

4.0 excellent | impeachnixon | December 24th 22 | Stranger in the Alps is amazing, and I love it so much, but at times it can feel a bit bloated (Georgia and Chelsea took a long time to grow on me, for example). Smoke Signals is maybe my favorite song of all time, though, so there's that.

4.0 excellent | TheGreatEscaper | December 21st 21 | I admit it, I am a Phoebe fanboi. I actually think this album is a little more homogenous than its successor, especially in the second half (which is saved by Georgia, the best song on the album and hugely underrated IMO), but when it hits, it HITS.

4.0 excellent | Bedex | November 6th 21 | Unlike a lot of ppl here I don't find this to be too samey/boring - after all I do like some fairly unvaried folkey albums, so it doesn't bother me here. I do find that Bridger's voice, whilst excellent most of the time, can sometimes not quite work for me especially in higher notes. Gene put it well. Sometimes it really does all sound quite corny. But mostly this is pretty, rarely stunning indie folk/balladey indie pop. 1 is beautiful and the subtle buildup is lovely, though I am not a fan of the panning. 2 is a bit more poppy or rocky even, which I think kinda ruptures with 1, but individually it is a good track. 3 would have linked up with 1 a lot better, as it is some more beautiful indie folk w nice instrumentation beyond guitar. 4 after that makes the first good non-comical use of a ?banjo I've ever heard. I do find that a few of the songs (2,5,7) overextend in their last third, with attempted climaxes that feel overlong nd don't really work. Before that tho 5 and 7 are both very pretty, especially the unfold at 1:10 on 7 which is a relief bcs for a sec I thought it'd be a ballad like 6. 6 works quite well with enough going on to keep the interest up, but two piano ballads in a row would've been too much. 8 is another simple pretty folk song, with some more examples of the vocals I don't really dig, and 9 attempts some variation with added male vox which I think are poorly integrated and detrimental to the track. 10 is a pretty ambientish ballad, and it's nice to see a wee outro track. Not a mindblowing album, but a sweet one. I should rejam it I wasnt super focused. 3.85

2.5 average | Mythodea | July 15th 20 | It's a pitty that such a gentle voice goes to
waste in an album that sounds like an exercise in
futility. Most strong cards are on the first half
of the album (Snoke Signals and Funeral), and by
the time we arrive to "Would you Rather", Oberst's
vocals are a nice addition solely because it's
something new in a homogenous sea of samey vocal
lines and guitar melodies. Lyrics are another
interesting element, albeit dramatic and "artsy",
with all the negative connotations. I'm sorry,
Phoebe, but it seems like it's you who missed my
heart with this one.

3.0 good | Gene Gol CONTRIBUTOR | June 26th 20 | This album is something strange. It doesn't really change its pace or style much throughout, and yet I still found it to be a bit of a mixed bag. Phoebe's lyricism and songwriting can be on the dam point like nobody else, but it can also be corny, a little awkward, unintentionally shy drag. And the more I listen to this album, the more some of the songs sound sleepy (like Demi Moore or Killer for the worst offenders).

3.7 great | Erwann S. STAFF | April 8th 20 | Julien Baker is that you? Few indie folk artists achieved to grab me. Phoebe is one of those few. The disparate instrumentation still is interesting in its own right, and that's imo what managed to keep me engaged throughout the whole record. Although the climaxes are subtle, they still bring an emotional addition to the words softly spoken. To delve into the lyrics, I have to be hooked by the music. She almost hooked me, as the first few tracks are astounding, and the record fails to keep up with these. As always with this kind of record tho, gotta focus on tha lyrics and aint nobody got time for dat imma jam some Ulcerate rn m/ m/ m/

4.0 excellent | maunbraun | October 21st 18 | This album has amazing lyricism. Bridgers's sound is so fitting for the tone of the album as she expresses the over-encumbering dealings of depression, eloquently opening up to feelings people don't often give light. It is so specifically elegant in that it is perfect to listen to at 4 a.m. with the window open to the night, or the morning. Perfect to listen to while in a wheat field with the sunset showering the world in a vibrant yellow-orange. A soundtrack for real life type of album because it is grounding yet so sublime. It is funny to call something so deep 'simple,' but this album is simply well-versed, beautiful.
