Portishead could probably have got away with just making a Xerox of Dummy; after all, that's probably what people were expecting, and it probably would have been eaten up a mainstream audience. That's not what they've done though; instead, they've offered up a 21st century update of Silver Apples, with a folk influence lifted from Beth Gibbon's extra-curricular excursions with Rustin Man. Its course takes it through territory that is alternatively heavier, lighter, more organic, more electronic, more futuristic, more pastoral, more abstract, and more direct than anything attempted by Portishead before, and anything attempted before by any trip-hop artist not named Tricky. "We Carry On", "Nylon Smile", "Hunter", "Machine GUn", and "Magic Doors" could all end up as cult classics. Frankly, it's a shockingly good album.

Instead of trying to make another Dummy, Portishead branch out into unfamiliar territory, and the record is all the better for it. It's still got the trademark Portishead gloom, but there's so much more as well: the heartbreaking honesty of "Deep Water," the sensual hypnotism of "Nylon Smile," and the stark, brutal heaviness of "Machine Gun" all signify that Portishead is fucking back and better than ever before.

'Third' is not only a reinvention of the genre (trip hop), but a logical progression for a set of some forefathers and that�s after only a 10+ year hiatus . 'Third' is less a return to form as it is a reminder of quality, quality that Portishead have always held themselves to, and it just so happens they took their damn time to remind us of just how viable they are(were). 'Third' is not the same Portishead, they've moved from the lounge club to the movie screen, crafting soundtrack gems that always manage to be as terribly frightening as they are beautiful. And Beth Gibbons, let it be said her voice has aged wonderfully, she masterfully sings over bombast beats (Silence, Machine Gun, We Carry On), acoustic strums (Small, The Rip) and even sways her way through the surf rock of 'Deep Water'. Her voice has deepened, she sounds heftier, weathered, less kitsch and naive, but this plays to her as all kinds of new strength. On cuts like 'Machine Gun' who's unsettling beat alone could be enough to turn some listeners away at first, that's before Beth grabs a hold of it, and matched with her croons it somehow becomes gorgeous. Or check 'The Rip' and it's slow build before it explodes from a great synth line to electronic bliss -- Gibbon's lights up giving her best performance on record. Exclaiming: "Wild white horses/They will take me away" leaving her mundane imagery behind for a little hope is an example of 'Third's core. A little darkness leads way to the light.

When I heard this album for the first time... I think Dummy was much better... But after a couple of listens... You figure out something in Third that is really beyond from Dummy... Is an evolution.... "Voce so ganha o que voce merece!!!!" ;)

What a great comeback album. And to throw in a lot of avant garde stuff, and use actual instruments rather than samples, takes a lot of cajones for a band this big. This singing is as beautiful and as fragile as ever, if not more so. I give it excellent just for the tracks "Hunter", "Small", and "We Carry On" alone. everything else is good too, although Machine Gun gets old after a while. I even found myself singing along with Deep Water out of nowhere one day after I woke up. Who would have thought a ukelele song about melting ice caps could be so catchy.

Portishead kinda thing...its depressive indeed but several sweet tracks. Enjoying it so far.
