4.0 excellent | RobGRobG | October 23rd 17 | I am not at all a fan of the clean vocals on this album. They feel forced. I get that adding clean vocals adds to the
depth of the album, however, I do not consider Colin to have as good a clean vocal as his screams are. Further I
feel the same routine is repeated throughout the album too much, continuing the pattern set in earlier records. As
soon as the signature soft part kicks in, in the middle of each song, the accompanying clean vocals start. It feels
as if AmenRa have perfected their song structuring and build but are lacking creativity. A solitary reign for me is
the one song that does have that song structure and build PLUS creativity and immediatly is by far the best song
on the album. The closing minute of the record is also a moment where AmenRa is full steam and has me
longing for more, reminding me of how much I love the rawer side of AmenRa which I feel I did not hear enough
on this bum. Seems like there has been a trade off from brutallity for epicness. All in all I still love it, it might also
be that this album is more of a ‘growth album’ that needs
extensive listening to really grab me, however, this Mass for me at the moment is their least attractive one. It
does add nicely to the entire catalog of AmenRa and I cannot wait to hear and see it live in little over a week.

5.0 classic | robotmagician | October 20th 17 | i've already listened to this much more than i would like to admit over the last few days. Amenra mixes their crushing with some of their most beautiful to date, with Colin's use of clean vocals being featured much more prominently this time arround, and reminds us of some of the best moments of their "Alive" release. this is an album to be remembered. A Solitary Reign is the best song to be released so far this year and nothing else has come close.

4.0 excellent | Bedex | October 7th 20 | I'm frankly lukewarm on this one. To be fair I havent jammed any Amenra in some time, but a lot of this feels a bit formulaic, and while it is of course well executed, I feel like they don't explode as much or for as long as they did previously. There are lots of good surprises though: the pyre-evoking intro of Plus Près de Chez Toi (thanks live gig), Spijt which is frankly a great, well placed interlude, the midtrack and finale on Diaken, and most importantly A Solitary Reign, which introduces a never-seen-before flavour of Amenra whereby hopeful guitars are placed atop the usual sludge, making for an unusual and quite magnificent feeling. But it just feels like the tracks build up for too long a time leading to not enough. The second half of Diaken crystallises the issue for me actually: the midtrack is super cool, then it stops, but instead of the album ending there we have silence then yet another long build up leading to maybe 30s of a finale that then ends abruptly. I like the finale, I like build ups, but the ratio seems just a bit off you know? I still love this band but unlike their prior releases I feel like the songs really don't work as well in studio as they did live. Maybe a matter of listening conditions though and will rejam. m/ dedex check ligeti 3.9

4.0 excellent | Mythodea | July 16th 20 | Approaching AmenRa's music more as an artistic statement rather than a product seems unavoidable.
The band's appeal stems greatly from the fact that it works as a therapeutic experience, both in
their cathartic compositions, and on their gatherings that we call "live performances". It's
one of the few instances that the image is not an advertising gimmick or an aesthetic hollow of
substance, but it works dialectically with the lyrics, the stage presence and of course, the
music itself. The band calls for empathy in their masses, the sharing of pain and a communal walk
on the trodden path to catharsis, granting them the status of the "church" they have chosen for
themselves, only this time you will find no apprasial to a higher being, but simply to the
transcendent experience of being human.

4.5 superb | Gene Gol-Jonsson CONTRIBUTOR | July 6th 20 | What by and large is the appeal of post-metal to me is that it often can transmit the emotional state of utter fury while possessing the energy levels of complete emotional exhaustion. It is something I often miss in genres like DSBM, where the two aspects are seated vice versa. And more than the lot of others, Amenra closed in on this particular state of music and perfected the musical feeling of complete emotional drain and hysteria turned to rage. I cannot place this record on a spectrum on their others, as they all - for lack of a better phrasing and in the nicest way possible - are the same. It is a tried and true musical formula that keeps on giving and I am happy (to be sad) for that.

4.4 superb | Erwann S. STAFF | January 6th 20 | A Solitary Reign is their most heartbreaking track, Children of the Eye works very well as an opener (ie it's in the same vein as Dearborn and Buried), Plus Pres de toi and its French-sung parts always broke my heart, and Diaken is a crusher. Sound-wise, it does not stray from what the band has already shown us, but as they sound like no one else, it does not impact the appreciation one could have of this album. Mass V introduced the band to me and will remain my go-to Amenra release, but this one remains very close. Classic Amenra, one of the very few bands capable of matching emotions and violence without losing their colossal sound. Catharsis should be renamed Amenra.

4.0 excellent | MasBarHigeuoris21 | October 24th 17 | The clean vocals and the short length of the album might disappoint some, but if you've been keeping up with Amenra since after Mass V, this album should be no surprise. Instead of sticking with their usual balls out sludginess, Amenra deliver a less direct post-metal blow to the head with this one. This sound doesn't always work, but when it does it sounds like a soundscape for the apocalypse. Mass VI is definitely different from previous Amenra albums, but this time different is good.
