Without the usage of the viola instrument and the stunning chemistry Jonny 5 has with Brer Rabbit, Fight with Tools might've just been another alternative hip hop album attempting so hard to prove all sorts of various points. I was introduced to Flobots through - surprise, surprise - the earworm-y "Handlebars", though this track alone does not determine the quality of the record itself; other standouts include "Stand Up," "Never Had It," "Combat," and "Mayday!!!".

So many great lyrics by the rappers Jonny 5 and Brer Rabbit. Great points include: "There's A War Going On For Your Mind", the spoken word intro by Brer Rabbit where he talks about the media's control over you; the poetic story of human potential and abuse of power in the Flobots' only major hit "Handlebars"; the demand for change in the jazzy song "Same Thing"; and "Anne Braden", the story of a white woman who fought against lynching in the civil rights movement. Its also great instrumentally, and in some ways it is a departure from you typical hip hop, with influences from funk, jazz, and garage rock. Favorite songs: Same Thing, Handlebars, Anne Braden, Rise, There's A War Going On For Your Mind, Mayday!!!
