Her album covers have now gone through all the stages of a vapid vaguely artful girl on
Instagram..
2007 - Full on, undiluted narcississm/2009 - professionally-tailored narcissism/2011 - curtailed
narcissism to focus on 'art'/2014 - a regal return to narcissism/2017 - supposedly cheeky take on
culture in some way, that is really still an ass picture of a narcissist..
as for the music, the woman knows how to record hard 3's all around..r

St. Vincent is the living embodiment of "stay woke". I couldn't stand her before and this sure as fuck didn't help.

Though I do love Annie's weird funky guitarwork, it's her more somber tracks that are her better compositions. "Happy Birthday, Johnny" is a gut-wrencher of a piano ballad, and similarly piano-y "New York" while bit more humorously tongue-in-cheek goofy. I love piano nonsense though so I'm a bit biased toward those tracks. Either way, MASSEDUCTION is good fine addition to Annie's discog. 3.3/5?

This record was a little polarising, as it sees the artist previously known for provocation in sound move towards provocation in theme and expression with a rather crisp and glitzy, unnecessarily so.

St. Vincent's sound gets rounded out into something fuller, and, in my opinion, more satisfying. The production gives some much added oomph behind Annie's somewhat thin (IMO) voice, and the tracklist never falters from being banging or emotionally affecting, or both at once. Yes, it's a much more radio-friendly, pop-oriented sound. But how can I complain when the songs are this good?

Insanely awesome contrast between the vibrant energetic Los Ageless and the soft sad heartbreak tune of New York. Also enjoy the sexual undertone's to a lot of songs on this album. "I can't turn off what turns me on"

Artsy synthpop blending electronic and traditional instruments into a modern mix akin to some Bowie/80s pop/Eurythmics but still fresh and unique in its own right thanks to the brains behind it, Annie Clark. MASSEDUCTION covers a lot of ground with plenty of emotion in Happy Birthday, Johnny and New York and more poppy, fun tracks in songs like Pills and Masseduction. Clark does well to cover serious and personal topics in her lyrics while still maintaining a very pop driven sound but can also get sexy with songs like Savior. From the opener to New York is stellar but after that the album does feel like it drags on a bit even though the tracks are still quite good; perhaps some rearrangement of songs would have done well for the flow.
