4.5 superb | swipenet | October 10th 17 | Please don't rate albums before they are released or without listening to them, it's a
pretty doodoo thing to do.
As you can clearly see, I think this album rules, and while I obviously cannot say for
certain that you'll like it, if you enjoyed any of their previous work, you should check
this out. All I ask is that you actually listen to it before rating, the singles
definitely don't do it justice.

4.0 excellent | ExhaleTheLight | October 19th 17 | After years of past musical sins (pun intended), Trivium finally step it up with The Sin and the
Sentence. A worthy addition to their catalog and one of their best releases since the Shogun era.
Alex Bent is a very valuable addition to the band and even outshines Travis Smith.
Everything is dialed up, the songs are longer and Matt's screams are back with force. The
Revanchist was a curve ball and a standout track. Did not expect those odd time signatures.

4.0 excellent | GeneralRaam | October 20th 17 | Definitely their best since Shogun, although still lacks a bit of overall flow to me. Most of the songs alone are good, some have the ingredients to be epic tracks but fizzle or don't build up to where they could. I feel like Trivium have always had the ability to make an all time classic record but have stuck too closely with generic choruses and structures. That being said, a welcome return to heaviness for the band and good to hear Heafy fire up again on the mic. The Wretchedness Inside and Thrown Into The Fire are ripping tracks.

4.0 excellent | Ebola | October 19th 17 | Trivium's best record to date. Boasting surprisingly tight and energetic riffs coupled with the
best vocal performance of Matt's career, this is a damn good slice of modern metal. Don't sleep on
this just based on the Trivium name. The new drummer's an absolute stud, too.

4.5 superb | marcusholt | October 21st 17 | It might not be perfect, but my god is the second half ridiculously good. The first half is also great overall. Beyond Oblivion is a banger, should have been a single.

4.5 superb | Ikarus14 | October 20th 17 | The second and third singles had me worried but the rest of this is really solid. Some of the best they've done since Ascendency and a bit of everything else afterwards blended in seamlessly. The new drummer is a great fit as well so here's hoping that they don't give him the boot like the other two.

4.0 excellent | chrisvasco23 | October 20th 17 | If you mix the albums Ascendency, Shogun and In Waves and you get The Sin And The Sentence. After the radio experimentation on the last two albums its refreshing to hear the sudden changes. Matt's vocals are much better, whether it be the harsh screaming or singing. The only two issues I have is the production.. the vocals are pushed above the instruments. And the song Other Worlds.. which in my opinion is much weaker than The Heart From Your Hate. Otherwise a great album.

5.0 classic | OGBatmanCuz | October 20th 17 | This is the album that every Trivium fan has been waiting for since Shogun. The new addition of Alex Bent provides the punch that Trivium has lacked since Shogun. From top to bottom this album is amazing. ALBUM OF THE YEAR!

0.0 | Chuggy | October 20th 17 | Trivium release the best thing they have done since the well-loved Shogun. We all knew these guys had it in them and they
have finally delivered something good here.
This is like a mix of the outright speed of Ascendancy, the technical playing of Shogun and the focused melody of
Silence.
There are some references to In Waves and Vengence mostly in the form of the lyrics which I feel fall a bit flat here. The
whole "shallow metaphor for personal struggles" is bland and is nothing like the badass lyrics about samurais and shit from
Shogun.
This is a strong effort from Trivium and hopefully, the response from fans will show them that Trivium is at their best when
they actually use the obvious talent they have.
The new drummer is a welcome addition and it would be criminal not to keep him around.

3.5 great | Jared Floryan | October 23rd 17 | Gee willikers, it's hard to believe Boat Rudder Strange Mountain is 12 years old at this point in history. Since their formation, Floridian heavy metal band Trivium have gone through botches much as they found themselves transmogrifying similar to just about every musical troupe on Planet Earth. I'm pleased to confirm that the group's eighth studio outing The Sin and the Sentence is in the latter camp. Standing at 11 songs, the album encompasses pretty much a lot of the sounds and characteristics Trivium have provided in the past. It's aggressive, unafraid to get a little complex thanks to newfound drummer Alex Bent (MVP), anthemic, and of course dulcet. The concrete instrumental chops from every contributor here is enough to call the full-length worthwhile. Yeah, I won't pretend that the mix is preferable to Silence in the Snow's DR10 field trip, plus the affair is herky-jerky on a compositional level... yet holy Hell in a Cell, is this monster still entertaining! The Sin and the Sentence is a good'un, that's for certain. Angel's ditty picks: "Beyond Oblivion," "The Wretchedness Inside," "The Revanchist," and "Thrown Into the Fire."

1.0 awful | zaruyache | October 22nd 17 | Trivium's "The Sin and the Sentence" tries and succeeds at reaching Imagine Dragons-levels of facile emotional drivel. Its choruses are all hollow fist-bumping anthems driven by puerile lyrics one would more expect to find coming from Black Veil Brides or an edgy ninth-grader's notebook. And while the music itself isn't that bad (the individual riffs themselves go from "pretty OK" to "surprisingly solid"), the songwriting itself is pretty mediocre. The transitions from build-up "light" sections to the heavy riff portions are often pretty jarring and rarely feel natural. Not only that, but the heavily repetitive writing also makes every song here overstay its welcome, feeling about a minute or more too long. The mixing is also fairly off at points. Despite maybe being more lively than "In Waves," "The Sin and the Sentence" is definitely a more aggravating album.

3.0 good | YAAAOOO | October 19th 17 | TSTS is a very diverse album but its diverse in the same pop metal cliches and tropes that have been the status quo since 2009, and the band doesn't add any flair or personality to those tropes to make it worth while. It sounds like they're performing these perfectly computer programmed hits they had no hand in creating to me. Sure its executed well but it sounds like Trivium going through the daily grind of a career they've lost passion for.
Lacking in genuineness and personality, though it is solid Trivium's 8th record is ultimately forgettable.
While the production is clear it lacks any sense of distinctiveness. The record is competent but why bother with something lacking so much substance, its Elevator Music: Metal Edition. This record feels hollow and tired.

2.0 poor | marf1300 | October 24th 17 | This album has some good riffs and will introduce many people to metal (I assume that's the source of the positive ratings). However, the sterile production and unoriginal songwriting are painful, especially those choruses. I only lasted 3.5 tracks before it became unbearable. Also, why is everyone raving about the drumming? It's just as generic as the rest of the album. EDIT: I tried listening to the rest of this (but failed). While the back half is heavier and features some excellent bridges/solos (see Sever the Hand), their uncanny ability to neuter metal amazes me.

4.0 excellent | whiskysoakedleather | April 9th 19 | This album holds a pretty special place in my heart, so there may be a degree of bias here. I vividly remember sitting in a waiting room, waiting to be called in to see my at-the-time councilor. I had a single earbud in my left ear, and I was carelessly scrolling through my recommended videos on YouTube, trying to find something new to listen to, to pass the time and to potentially liven the mood for my own sake. I came across "The Sin and The Sentence." The thumbnail caught my eye, and I decided to say fuck it and give the track a try. Quite frankly, it sent a chill down my spine. The almost epic soundscape that that song provides through the mostly simplistic melody lines and the anything but simplistic drums made me crack a smile. Watching the music video, although I shouldn't compose my personal views on music off of music videos, made me feel like a child constructing his own definitions on what he considers to be "cool." Needless to say, the secondary earbud was soon in and the volume was all the way up. I have since listened to Trivium's entire discography, and I can say that this is far and away their best album. Other than the title tack, The Revanchist, Thrown Into The Fire and Beauty In The Sorrow absolutely steal the show. A solid effort by Trivium,

2.5 average | HarveyDjent | July 1st 18 | Trivium is back at it again. After the absence of harsh vocals on their last album after lead singer Matt Heafy blew out his voice on stage in 2013, harsh vocals make their return. But do not expect drastic changes to their sound. More generic, repetitive rubbish with some mediocre riffing. The new drummer knows what he's doing, and I expect he'll wisen up to the folly of wasting his talents on Trivium like the last couple of drummers who've come and gone. Lyrically, it seems they're trying to give off more of an intellectual theme. Be it the title track warning of social media, Beyond Oblivion on the dangers of AI, or Thrown Into The Fire about corruptness in the Church, they're showing off that they're more than Metallica-lite, but not much more. The Revanchist is one of the highlights on the album, delivering a catchy, heavy tale. The Heart From Your Hate has to be one of the blandest, overused, repetitive songs from their catalogue in recent memory. Betrayer is the closest thing you'll get to Heafy's death metal roots and it ***ing slays. The re-recorded version of Pillar of Serpents on the Japanese version is probably the most memorable track in this sea of over-saturated metalcore. All in all, nothing mind-blowingly spectacular but decent.
