5.0 classic | mortifierftw | August 22nd 17 | I think Menzingers may still hold up as my AOTY but holy fuck is this album incredible. Little bit of the National, Titus Andronicus, Bruce Springsteen, Smith Street Band, the Pogues, and There Will Be Fireworks all in one to create something insanely ambitious and out of nowhere. Haven't felt this way about an album since the Monitor

3.5 great | TheManMachine | November 29th 17 | Their stagy-n-sentimental nature is a considerable red flag, the ambition overtly overstated, 5+minute loquacities the norm and broken up with stringterludes that transmit waiting for a wedding to start. Gotta hand it to da gang, though: their drive is dogged and rather gorgeous and oh how notably amiable they are in anthemic mode. Intelligent and genuinely emotionally engaging enuff to almost make ya fret that Le'aupepe is too oft-mumbly to let em meld into the rock-band mainstream. Able to tackle wrestling with religion in a mature manner and go noisy and make gripping mantras outta shopworn positivities and seamlessly cop Journey. Corny and/or steep on the whole, but hey -- he's a "heart in the gutter type" with Springsteen in mind and Flowers for posture, Gang Green's the pastor, they're seemingly gunning for a punk rock opera of sorts. Ehh give em a break.

4.0 excellent | Aspenshadow | September 5th 17 | Great album but pretty bloated and at times it feels like they throw the kitchen sink at you stylistically. Some songs are majestic and huge, some are sensitive and intimate, and some are boring and cheesy. Also, pls stop using midi strings. Atlas Drowned is dope.

4.0 excellent | fog CONTRIBUTOR | November 30th 21 | This band plays in the dangerous territories of derivative hero worship that could sink a contemporary rock act (see the Gaslight Anthem), but somehow they emerge on the other side, triumphant, grinning, and with one ear permanently bent and floppy.

3.9 excellent | Erwann S. STAFF | January 7th 20 | Let's start with the obvious flaws: yes it's too long, yes the less good cuts are dragging. But GADDAYM when it hits, it fucking hits you like the meteorite hit these dinos back in the days. The good cuts here are absolutely phenomenal (tracks 1, 2, 3, 11, 12, 14, 16 should please your papa), and The National vibes sure help me instantly love this. And for once it's not only whiny not-an-adolescent-anymore-but-too-fucked-up-to-be-a-real-adult lyrics (i still love you OtIP) but truly heartbreaking prose. Basically the most Darkness in the Edge of Town record since 2014's Holy Vacants. Or since 1978, you choose. Just cut it in half next time and you'll get yourself a classic, because now half of it is a 3 and the other half is a big fat 5.

4.0 excellent | lz41 | February 19th 18 | "The Positions" is a tricky album to follow up. Not just because it was so good but because it was such a finished product - introduction, thematic discussion, resolution - that Gang of Youths were obliged to start afresh with a distinguished sophomore. "Go Farther in Lightness" is still a bloody heavy listen, rolling around in songs about depression, suicide, break-ups, crises, boring changes and not one but *two* long dirges about kids dying, but it fixes its sight on spiritual salvation. Helpfully, cathartically passionate frontman David Le'aupepe decided he would rather write a musical novel than an album. These relentlessly immediate pieces contain a prose that you just don't see in pop music. To all who wondered if they could fall for Gang of Youths' emotional heft and relative obscurity a second time - the well is yet to run dry. Best Tracks: 'Fear and Trembling', 'Do Not Let Your Spirit Wane', 'Persevere', 'Let Me Down Easy', 'The Heart is a Muscle'.
