I don't understand how anyone could call this album insincere. If anything, it's a bit TOO on the
nose, but that's sort of a necessary "evil" when considering the background behind this record:
frontman Rou Reynolds went through the breakup of a 7-year relationship, bouts of insomnia,
losing family members, drug problems, and struggling with anxiety before and throughout writing
this record. Some songs are stronger than others, sure, but The Spark is Enter Shikari's most
introspective and personal statement to date. That's gotta count for something.

Shikari's shtick has always been merging off-kilter electronic noises with competent -core instrumentals to form a unique sound, and then slightly marring it with a pretentious hamfisted message about shit nobody cares about.
This album is largely the inverse. Lyrics are more personal and relatable (though still too heavyhanded to see as fully sincere), but the compositions simply aren't there to back them up. Everything that made the previous records work despite their flaws
is unpresent, and the flat production only heightens the absolute nothingness that is the music.
Not terrible, some catchy hooks, but I'd much rather hear someone call me a cunt for throwing water bottles in the trash juxtaposed against a sick track.

Being the poster child, and somehow still a surviving representation, of post-club bipolar synth music somewhere between rock and nervous breakdown, Enter Shikari's 'The Spark' seems like a significant step-up from most anything the band has done until now, which still means that it's the same old same old repackaged in glitzier production, slightly cleaner and more straightforward in delivery.

This is absolutely criminally underrated and one of their best albums, The Spark takes Enter Shikari to their illogical extremes as a full blown pop band. Centered around Rou?s vintage synthesizer and ever improving singing, once you embrace the sound the band has chosen this go-around, the album unfolds into an overblown, melodramatic, haphazardly assembled odyssey that shouldn?t work on any level, but in the end it somehow does, and hasn?t that been their MO since the start?

At first this may be a minor let down if you are waiting for the return to TTTS. It turns down rthe hardcore edge of the band and turns up the more anthemic vein of ES. All in all, an hand full rof great additions to future setlists. Favs: An ode to Lost Jigsaw Pieces ; Airfieldr(3.8)
