TBDM went from Melodic Death Metal to Melodic Death Metal with heavy influences of tech death and
now thrash thanks to Ellis; this album is a monstrous collection of riffs and solos thanks to him.
Every track on here is visceral and taking you at breakneck speeds the entire time. The production
on here is superb as well. Now you can hear Lavelle outside of fills and breakdowns while
Cassidy's drumwork has some ridiculous punch on here. Trevor's vocals really come to light here,
acting as the blade on a knife - more like a fucking chainsaw - already being produced by the rest
of the band. Can't forget to mention Eschbach here: dude's always keeping this band fresh, and
this is super fresh by TBDM standards. Only cons I can think of here are that nine tracks seems a
little short for an album like this and Trevor's vocals seem a little far back in the mix.

After listening to it about 15 times over the last few days, i think its safe to say this is a comfortable 9/10. its up there with the best the band has ever put out and among the best in the genre. TBDM have perfected melding hooks with pure brutality and i don't see evidence of anyone doing it better right now.

The most consistent train in melodeath keeps on rolling into the night with their eight consecutive full length released on an odd year since 2003. Over that whole time period The Black Dahlia Murder have evolved a lot but the last several releases sound familiar with standout tracks becoming harder and harder to pick out. BDM have a formula and they stick to it with Trevor Strnad being one of the best vocalists in the extreme metal business. The production here is about as good as it gets for the BDM discography; it has come a long way since the Miasma days and overall BDM's sound just gets tighter and tighter. Perhaps it has gotten just a bit too tight. The aggression is on full display and sans a few midtempo riffs in the title track and Kings of the Nightworld, things are somewhat indistinguishable unless you want to spend a lot of time with this record. This is despite a relatively short 33-minute runtime. BDM ain't broke so don't fix it but introduction of a few fresh elements to the music could go a long way or this might become the classic band you go out to see live and spend less time with the new records. Go see them live, they are incredibly entertaining. Checkout 'Nightbrigers', 'Kings of the Nightworld' and 'As Good As Dead'.

Where consistency turns formulaic
The production is garbage, Trevor is buried in the mix making it hard to hear any nuance in his vocals. I can't tell if the riffs have gotten less melodic or if the production is just making them sound congested (why not both).
The first TBDM record I won't be coming back to.
