This is probably the best debut album I've ever heard given the circumstances. While writing and recording these songs, Elliott had no intention of releasing this as an album. He had been playing in Heatmiser, and his solo work was just a little side project that nobody knew about, and Elliott wanted to keep it that way. His friend discovered a tape that he had put together and really liked it. She reccomended that he release it and try and focus on solo work, so that's what he did. He recorded all these songs on a small four-track in his house, and like I said, given the circumstances, this is probably the best debut album ever.

Very overrated album on this website. Not one song was good in my opinion. I do like some of Smith's music, but nothing on this album. Not good at all, but you can see the potential at least.

"Roman Candle" is the first and most underrated solo album by Elliott Smith. After leaving Heatmiser, a band of little success that had as its biggest star itself, Elliott began to show the world why he is the most complete songwriter of his generation. His first albums are perfect, and the debut is as bare and raw as possible. Elliott was always a great lyricist, and his story began to be written here. I am passionate about his music, and i can not see some studio album of him below the perfect rating (perhaps From Basement on the Hill by the fact that I did not listen often like the others).

Once again...I am trying to give number to something that shouldn't have any number on it...There is reason why I am rating Elliott's music as loosely as I do...because his albums aren't flawless unique albums, they are flawless expressions of who was Elliott Smith, when he was writing that perticular album. It's like losing friend...and I am just reliving all of these memories over and over again...I've lost friend that I've never met, but strangely I know way too much about him.
Wanna know what is so special about this album ??
Well: Roman Candle, Condor Ave., No Name #1, No Name #2, No Name #3, Drive All Over Town, No Name #4, Last Call and Kiwi maddog.
Some of these are better songs than others, but all of them are great journey

This is an exellent album. Litsen to all the talent in this, you cant even compare it to that crap like "When I grow up" Or basicly anything that plays on the beat. All these songs are amazing and have real meaning. Anyone who dosent like it is Deaf, influenced by crappy trends or just plain retarded. Thank you for reading this
