This new album is the same uninspired stuff Satyricon is throwing at us since Volcano. The mainstream will call this a progression comparing it to their previous 3 releases, or more cleary, there last s/t album. Yet I can hear no single exciting note, their less is more approach is as dry as your grandmother's ****. The only reason I listen to their new stuff is because of their 4 first releases. One might say for nostalgic reasons, but this band was once king. Luckily there are tons of interesting bands out there keeping the flame alive. Bands which progressed to such levels Satyr can only dream of. Can...but I'm sure Satyr only dreams about himself.

I have been waiting for a good album since Volcano. It doesn't do the job quite. They progressed their sound over the years. Good for them, just not my taste.

While there are a few tracks that actually get their black'n'roll grooves going correctly, most of the tracks don't. Which is to say: most of them aren't good. Satyricon keep pushing their mid-paced "black metal with some minor rock 'n' roll groove" shtick which has never worked for them and probably never will, and Deep Calleth Upon Deep is just another example of them trying to keep a sinking ship afloat for really no reason at all at this point.

Deep Calleth Upon Deep should theoretically be a cool album. It's focused and creative and their heaviest album since Volcano. But for whatever reason, I begin tuning it out the moment I start listening to it. No matter how cool your album seems on paper, that doesn't matter if you forget to have energy and actually decent songwriting.
