Elil takes its name from the Lapine word for "enemy" in Richard Adams' Watership Down, and it's a fitting title for a record that drags you through a landscape of tension, brutality, and looming dread. From the outset, Elil doesn't rush - its atmospherics build a sense of unease, a somber weight that subtly overwhelms the listener before the sonic barrage arrives. When the attack does come, it's unrelenting, and suffused with the weight of its own relentless momentum. The contrast with their debut Owsla (meaning "guardian" in Lapine) is striking. Where Owsla felt like a pure expression of aggression (again, like popo), the band's primal ferocity on that album was a guardian's defensive stance, a force fiercely protecting its territory. On Elil, though, the aggression comes in waves, always with a tension simmering beneath. It's a more calculated rage, unfolding with a quiet dread before it violently erupts. When compared to their final record, Inle, Elil feels less mournful but no less tragic. Inle saw Fall of Efrafa retreat into a bleaker, slower tone, its themes of death and loss becoming pervasive across its lumbering, sorrowful soundscapes. Elil, by contrast, strikes a balance?its aggression is grounded in the landscape of conflict, yet never fully consumes the entire atmosphere, leaving enough room for reflection amidst the brutality. It's an album that will make you feel the weight of its concept: the war between nature's enemies, the inevitability of resistance, and the emotional toll it all takes.

Ah, man. I can't blame conditions for this one. Plus I need to start committing to some of these demotions because I really don't like the look of all these pending 5s. This has atmosphere in buckets. The vocal samples are one thing, but the broody, eerie little guitars really set up moods quite potently. The band is excellent at taking ample space that does not feel void, and this makes the contrast with the occasional faster paced, harsher utter riffage sections all the more powerful. Vocals are excellent, and there are many sections that are 5 worthy. But there are also long stretches that just aren't. A seminal album for me that reminds me of a bygone era, and a masterclass in atmospheric sludge metal stuff, but no longer meets my standards for a 5 I'm afraid. 4.35
