A surprisingly solid effort. I'm not at all ashamed to indulge in irreverent pop music, never do I brand even the fluffiest of pop stars as a guilt to enjoy, but since her debut Kesha has been a genuine "guilty" pleasure of mine mostly because of her complete unabashed corniness (quite honestly I always considered her as some sort of warped Kidz Bop commercial mutation of Peaches). But Rainbow is arguably the best album to come out of this recent surge of top 40 pop stars costuming themselves in country/folk/pop/lite-rock/whateverness (i.e. Joanne, Mileys Malibu, Harry Styles, etc). I think it strikes a commendable balance between her usual corniness and the musical breadth she aspires to in a way that Warrior absolutely failed at. Finding You is pop gold and I hope it gets its dues.

Rainbow is an album that is incredibly important to me, even though I only enjoy about half of the songs. I remember crying my eyes out to Bastards when I saw Kesha perform it on the Rainbow tour, and that was the first time I started to question my gender and sexual identity. This album is an apologetically hopeful experience, and sometimes I desperately need that. I have always loved Kesha and this has become her definitive album to me.

Her legal dealings with predatory producer of yore Dr. Luke invoke accomplished artistic freedom and emotional scarring gettin' tackled by a determined defiance that's silly and striking and sincere. Hence Kesha seemingly on her mettle -- it surely tips the obnox+sappy scales on occasion (intentionally and un) but there's alot to appreciate bout the range and a bulk of the tunes. Country chops, breathtaking balladry, big bright punk-pep barnburners backed by Eagles of Death Metal, a clawed bare-barring-boots rolling stoner one minute and a dittier about the double-edged sword that is dating Godzilla the next, cursing aplenty, catchy as fuck. If it sounds like a somewhat ridiculous romp with a topical twist, that's prolly cuz it kinda is. There's also the hook of "Learn to Let Go" being like a hair away from Miley's "Party in the USA"; but I was aurally swayed to let it go.

Stylistically this is all over the place, but it's still a fun-ish record. The more serious tracks are more than a bit cheesy, but Kesha finds herself at her best when she's at her silliest, it seems. This is surprisingly OK.

It's not as joyously obnoxious as her last albums (which sputnik will assuredly one day correct its sins and praise at least Warrior as highly as Carly Rae's E-MO-TION), but the "Joanne" levels of rootsy-ness suit her just fine. "Hunt You Down" and the Dolly Parton duet "Old Flames" are especially fantastic.
