I just never could get into this album. It's filled with cheesy keyboard and guitar lines that are somewhat like very poor Muse B-sides. And not to mention with lyrics like,
Life is short
So learn from your mistakes
And stand behind
The choices that you make
just shows the lack of originality. The title track is an excercise of overtly long pretnetious material that seems like they wanted an epic instead of letting it flow. And that song can describe this entire album, forced.

The first 7 songs are some of the worst Dream Theater's written, but the closing title track is just so
phenomenal, I find it bringing up for the score of the lackluster, if not inherently bad, album.

Even the weak albums of Drem Theater are superb albums!!! This is exactly the reason why this band is so huge and the best prog metal band ever....The title track is one of the best epic songs of the prog metal gods, "The root of all evil" is amazing song and one of the best on the album, "These walls" and "Walk beside you" are catchy and great, "The anwer lies within" is a beautiful ballad with amazing lyrics and "Sacrificed sons", "Panic attack" and "Never enough" (Very underrated song) are addicting and i love them...DREAM THEATER->THE BEST BAND EVER CREATED!

Octavarium tries to be the best of two sides simultaneously, which leads it to stumble and slump too much from tracks two through six. Not all is lacking, however, as the album opens and closes with terrific, notable numbers. They're just not enough to propel the album alongside almost every thing else they previously released.

Portnoy describes this as an attempt at a "classic DT album" which is odd, considering it sounds very different from anything else they've done. The two ballads ruin the mood for me, and Never Enough is way too much of a rip-off of Muse (who I am not much a fan of). However, the positives so heavily outweigh the negatives. The last two tracks are amazing, especially the t/t which is imo the best ever song. Jordan is huge on the album and I suspect had a large part in composing it.

It's surprisingly good. Dream Theater cut back on some of the wankery, and while the songs aren't any shorter, the album's much tighter than some of their efforts. It may not be their "best" per se, but it's one of my favorite.

'Octavarium' is a fantastic record and another solid addition to Dream Theater's discography. It's not as heavy or as technical as some of their earlier releases, and "I Walk Beside You" doesn't do much for me, but the epic title track more than makes up for this.

Similar to FII, for the most part, Octavarium seems simply too commercial for a band like DT. There is though 2 very solid tracks in the powerful 'Sacrificed Sons' and the epic 'Octavarium'. Unfortionatly, though, these great tracks seem to be shrouded by mediocrity such as the U2 sounding 'I Walk Beside You' and the Muse-y 'Never Enough' and the depressing 'The Answer Lies Within'.
Saying that, it is better than FII and the muddle of Systematic Choas and it's not a bad gateway album to get into the band.
Recommended for newcomers to DT, otherwise look elsewhere.

Obviously Dream Theater's songwriting here is influenced by other bands. When I first heard the title track start with the "spacy" ambient guitar, I instantly thought "Pink Floyd".
The album as a whole isn't very good, but the title track by itself is amazing and makes the album worth owning.

Its such a shame this album is not like the last 2 songs. Octavarium has a very weird mixture of songs. The Root of all Evil and the Answer Lies Within are very Average tracks at best, Thankfully These Walls picks the album up and is a very good track. This leads on to by far the worst track on the album I walk beside you which sounds like a horrible tribute to Muse, downright awful. Panic Attack then picks up from where These Walls was good and produces a great track to the album. But its the last 2 songs which bumps up the rating. Sacrificed Sons is one the most emotionally driven DT songs ever done about Terrorism and War, its an exceptional song which gives the album some lease of life.
The climax song Octavarium is an absolutely amazing closing track and possibly the best DT song ive heard. Its not short of influences like Pink Floyd and Rush however its defo still DT. The solo by Petrucci at the end is immense, filled with so much emotion and passion and proves Petrucci is not all about speed and technical ability, he still remains one of my favourite guitarists out there. Its just a shame the rest of the album doesnt live up to the final 2 tracks.

Technically speaking, this, like all Dream Theater albums, is incredible. But the matter of the fact is that this album is just too much wank and too much yawn to be anything but boring and crappy. Plus Larbie just doesn't fit the band at all, and at this point just sounds like the crazy hair metal singer who thinks just because of the lyrics he's suddenly a prog singer. If Dream Theater maybe got a handle on the concept of songwriting, and got a new singer that fit into the band, then Octavarium would be a good album for sure.

I'm either one of few that understands this album, or I am just a lost soul. In my opinion this is easily Dream Theater's best effort since Metropolis Pt. 2, and it features the only example of Jordan Rudess's keyboard work that I actually enjoy. The Root Of All Evil is a great start and is a very metal-like song, along with the classic Panic Attack. The Answer Lies Within is probably the only clunker, really killing the mood between the opening track and the extremely commercial (yet extremely strong) These Walls. I Walk Beside you is great for a U2 song, not Dream Theater. The bands extreme precision keeps the loose feel that made U2 great at bay, and just shows to be a mediocre song. Never Enough is also somewhat forgettable, but still isn't too bad.
The highlights, however, lie in the final two tracks, which are two Dream Theater's greatest songs ever. Sacrificed Sons is simply beautiful and emotional the whole through, and features the greatest lead guitar line after Petrucci's solo. Octavarium is probably going to stand as the best progressive rock song of the decade, with an epic intro, and John Petrucci's best solo ever at the end. One hell of an album, and I think everyone should check it out.

This was the first Dream Theater album I heard and wasn't the last. Between Octavartium and Train of thought there is a change in style, with Train of thought rocking more and Octavarium less so. Despite this the playing on the album is masterful and a joy to listen to, less can be said for the vocals though which are cringe worthy at times. Combining this with some of the duller tracks makes the album weaker as a whole, although this album has some moments similar to the Train of though album which makes it worth listening to.

The new record from Dream Theater was for me a let down. Many songs on the album are rather dull, plain and just filler really. Yet on here are some real good instrumental moments. The only real songs of note are Panic Attack with the most awesome bass solo I have ever heard, and the title track, providing 24 minutes of solid music. Only those tracks, and Dream Theaters musical ability on the tracks really redeem it. For the die hard fans a must have, for those not into Dream Theater, a no no.
