I really think that this new offering is among the band's very finest. In fact, I think it's between this one and 'The Gathering' for the top spot. Every single element of the classic Testament sound comes together here and the production is fantastic. Plus, all the songs are memorable after a few spins....I don't know what's been going on in 'Modern Thrash' over the past few years, but me likey. A lot. This effort by Testament, the last two from Exodus, and the last two from Iced Earth have ALL far exceeded expectations. Not only is the writing on these albums far better than the average, but the production quality is literally THE best I've heard on any crop of metal albums from any era. Unbelievably good stuff.

Average. I can't think of a better word to describe "The Formation of Damnation" than that. With the return of the classic line-up and the inclusion of Paul Bostaph on drums, one would expect the gates of metal heaven to open and bestow upon the world something great. Instead, we get two-minute long breakdowns on the title track, and lackluster riffs scattered throughout, sans "Henchman", "More Than Meets the Eye", and "F.E.A.R.". It's not so much that this album is terrible, it's really not...it's just painfully average.

I honestly do not get the high ratings modern Testament gets. The tracks are good. That is good, not great, 3 at the time tops, but beyond that way too similar. Alex?s soloing is great, but the riffs are just 1 and the same unfortunately. Some cool odd-meter riffs like in Dangers of the Faithless too.

Tasty tasty riffs. Eric Peterson is a god of thrash metal. That's not to diminish his bandmates - Chuck Billy is probably the greatest thrash vocalist ever; drummer Paul Bostaph gives a bombastic, relentless performance; Alex Skolnick remains second only to Marty Friedman as far as thrash soloists go. The album rarely rises above being just a great collection of thrash tunes, but I suppose that's good, as it delivers. Testament has new classics in "More Than Meets the Eye", "The Persecuted Won't Forget" and "Henchmen Ride".

Even with a few relatively strong tracks, the best part about The Formation of Damnation turns out to be its great, epic album art. Granted, this isn't to say the album is bad or even mediocre it's just less impressive than one might expect from even glancing at the cover. The reality is that this release has most of what the band needs to make an album close to their 80s material, but not enough here feels driven in a way that propels to much higher than good or great.

This is the first time I've met Testament and I'm not really convicted about them. What I must admit is that I enjoy listening to this album, but these times, there is so much to enjoy that you have to bring in something more. That's what Testament didn't. Just ANOTHER bay area thrash product.

At first... i thought Testament is going to thread water and use a more modern metal approach... But after listening to this.. i was blown out of the water. the band is tight.. the musicianship bar has been raised. Alex Skolnick is back with Testament on this record. Skolnick lays down some fast thrashing on this record. Since his absence Testament was never the same with their guitar work. This has to be one of the finest thrash release for sometime now. everything is top notch.. There are no fillers here... I think they have outdone what i would never have expected of testament to do again after their last few records.... Some Very Very high quality thrash
