A grower.. on first listen, due to being so fluid from song to song, although I enjoyed it, it caused the impression that all was a big enjoyable blur. After you let it sink in and get the hang of it, it's full of superb songs and the wholeness of the album just makes it better.
It may become a 5 in time, who knows? A 4.5 at the moment.

The Manchester Orc is surprising not the bleak metal or the rip-face metal but the purepop in the stile of the Noel rand Liam Gallahads (I confused are you?)

The most underhated record of the '10s; absolutely characterless trash from one of the best alt rock bands of the '00s. Everything that used to be good about them - particular the dynamic songwriting of the first few LPs - is COMPLETELY gone, and it's been replaced with bottom-tier radio indie with legitimately terrible production and passionless vocals.

A Black Mile to the Surface shows Manchester Orchestra going for a layered and expansive sound. On the spectrum of the band's sound this leans more toward Like a Virgin or Simple Math rather than Mean Everything to Nothing or Cope. While listening through it, I made the realization that I prefer the more intimate, tender, and emotional stuff they do. Don't get me wrong, I like hearing them rock out, but I feel it's really special when that emotional core of their music shines through. This album has that special quality that I connect with, and it's right up there with some of the best they've done.

.5 better than COPE. Congrats, I guess. rThis is an example of great songwriting bogged down by poor production choices. There are so many layered effects on the album that the surface is barely noticeable beneath the echoing fog. This album feels like a missed opportunity for a clear return to form.

It'd been a while since I last heard it. 1-7 is near perfect (in a indie 4.5 way), though 4 does put a damper on that as it sticks out a bit and doesn't feel it matches the others in quality. 8-9 is less perfect, but unlike 4 they don't stick out and do actually fit. They're good songs, they just feel half a tier below their predecessors is all. 10 is a nice but bare bones ballad with slightly over-reverberated vocals given how quiet the instruments are, then 11 takes on the more expansive sound again, with a slightly different, nostalgically hopeful vibe that makes it work well as a concluding track. Honestly might bump this eventually. 4.2

I'm not a big Manchester Orchestra fan but "The Gold" was/is a 5/5 song for me and "The Alien" was
pretty cool too so I was pumped for this. Well it's mostly a snooze-fest and I should have checked
my enthusiasm. "The Wolf," "Lead, SD," "The Mistake," and "The Silence" are all really forgettable
which is too bad because ~aesthetically~ this is the most interesting and distinctive the band has
ever sounded. "The Parts" could easily be a Right Away, Great Captain! song so that's great I
suppose.
