Another excellent The War on Drugs album, despite some familiar elements. I can't help but think at times that this style is going to run out of steam soon, but for now it's still going strong with some of the band's best cuts to date including "Thinking of a Place," "Strangest Thing," "Pain," and "In Chains."

I can't remember the last time a new release destroyed me this thoroughly, this quickly. Criticisms will probably come later, but for now, I'm just going to let it all wash over me.

watching them perform in a small club comes damn close to a revelatory experience.. but as an album, this is overlong.. they stick to the formula, but bump up guitar pyros enough to keep life coursing through it.. percussion is listless again. lovely band..

This album sounds just amazing on first listen, however the impression might change with repeated listens. After a while some songs felt more stale and long winded. Also the lyrics do nothing for me, seem generic and plane. In general it is still quite the enjoyable album, with great vibe.

It's not that the songs are worse - it's the album. The fact that Adam Granduciel turned a simple, boring piano chord duo into the classic that is "Up All Night" shows that despite making zero steps forward in evolution, there is still plenty of inspiration left. What drags this album down is the awful pacing. Individually, "Thinking of a Place", "In Chains", "Clean Living", and "You Don't Have To Go" are all formidable tracks, with In Chains being among their best ever. Collectively, it can feel like being stuck in mud, with Adam's increasingly raspy, out of breath-like voice becoming ever more apparent. All in all, still quality, and still worth listening to.

I found A Deeper Understanding to be slightly better than its predecessor. Despite the simplicity in its rhythmic part (loop-like drum beats and basic supportive bass lines), The War On Drugs manage once again to create through subtle and astute melodies a captivating ambiance. This album is full of stupendous sounds and catchy moments which take the band's quality to the next level. Recommendations: "Thinking of a Place", "Holding On", "In Chains", "Pain"

They have a formula, it's a good formula and they do it right, but it's time to think about
shaking the things up and dont extend it so much, an hour and 6 minutes for something so
homogenic in it's core seems a stretch. Great album nonetheless.

Hiding from an enemy, something inside me dies, hard to see clear these days with darkness on my mind. As I stare into the ocean floor and I wonder where I once was, was I falling through into the air that night and crumbling to your arms? Is this love? Are you sure? Is it something you can control? I'm tired, I'm in chains, I'm in love, I'm in pain. All these changes everywhere, just go ahead and take my hand, pull me close, don't let me go, try to understand. I believe in all the power in doing what we can do, we can try and learn to make it through. Come out the other side. I don't see it you at all coming in view, how do we decide what we can do? I don't read your mind, give me clues.
