Steven Wilson strays further from progressive rock with his most forward thinking album yet. To The Bone is a colorful, accessible yet diverse rock album that explores the modern age of distorted truths and volatile nature of world affairs in 2017. Steven Wilson doesn't just revel in doom and gloom as one might anticipate him doing, but phases in and out of joyful moments ("Nowhere Now" and "Permanating"), being the most surprising here, and more progressive songs like the title track and "Detonation." Much of To The Bone follows a more straightforward rock pacing, but not without wide shifts in tone and mood. All in all, this is a hugely impressive statement from Wilson. It's an album that hearkens to Porcupine Tree's Stupid Dream in that it has the potential to be enjoyed by anyone, riding the line impressively between going very accessible (at times), and furthering artistry.

This is just the album of this decade. Blows my mind with all the perfect musicality, emotions and technical implementation. Didn't expect Mr Wilson to ever produce anything better than The Raven, but he just made it (in many aspects, of course the genres are pretty different).

It's really hard to compare this to his other works because it is a bit of a departure from his usual style... I imagine this will get some exaggerated responses from both sides of the spectrum because of that. All in all, this is yet another consistent release of Steven Wilson excellency, and it will still satisfy fans even if it is some of his most divisive work.

I absolutely love Porcupine Tree and Wilson's first solo album, but somehow I can't stand the rest of his solo stuff. I really tried to like it but his lyrics are often awful and he just sounds so damn whiney all the time. Hope we get to see a PT reunion soon

It's his Falling Into Infinity, for better or worse. Surely, after so many stands against disposable music, easy listening and the posing of various mainstream wonders, to overexpose this way now and release such a pander album, it's at least controversial for his intellectual honesty. The often mentioned comparison with Stupid Dream is a stab to the heart of Porcupine Tree: that was a prog album inspired, sincere and spontaneous, with echoes of Beatles and psychedelic rock. While TTB is mostly a revised and actualized eighties synth pop, entirely assembled and chiseled to maximize the commercial potential of SW by emasculating the contents, trivializing the experimental vein and mortifying the artistic ambitions of Insurgentes and GfD. Have been truly supporting SW since Signify, still it takes the courage to admit, without being snob, that this album marks a self-reported creative drift, depressing and sometime embarrassing, no matter all several rave justifications brought to us. TTB could be a bunch of redrawn outtakes, it alternates indefensible over tidy refrains, good for the next Eurovision Festival, with sickly, sometime whining, re-chewed elements of Wilson repertoire; all in order to obtain an effect of immediacy, sadly without the quality of truly great pop songs. Giving up to any originality, the output is a denial of a career spent evolving and researching for new solutions. It all ends up to be his most harmless LP, a narcissistic attempt to monetize years gone building a success within a niche, by moving to a major label and ensuring himself a powerful promotion.

Uncharacteristic poptimism from prog's poster boy of gloom. To the Bone is solid instrumentally, brilliantly produced (as ever) but Wilson's vocals and lyrics feel either unconvincing or parodic. A fine album, but easily his weakest solo effort.

Steven Wilson has evolved and incorporates a more "Pop" sound while still keeping his Prog Rock roots. The result is an interesting, fun and also somber record to listen through. Though many of the older fans may dislike some of the "poppier" songs, Steven will no doubt recruit a new wave of fans with this album. A worthy addition to his already outstanding discography.

This album it's not a well don pop album as Wilson thinks. I'll say it's more of a bad Prog album. It's full of boring ideas, And the final track I don't know if it's meant to be a quote to the final of Hand. Cannot. Erase. but if it is it's just mean to remind us that he is capable of a 5!

Intersting collection of diverse prog-rock/pop songs. As always Steven Wilson provides great instrumentation, including many electronic parts. Steven's vocals sometimes lack conviction but guest performences are some of the brightest moments on the album. Some of the tracks fall flat, while others are truly great making this a very uneven record.
