They've always been catchy, but Evil Friends saw Portugal. The Man move in an unabashedly pop direction, one that's continued here but just as focused on texture and timbre as it is hookiness. Could we have been given more after a four year wait? Almost surely. But I'll take a brief album of consistent hits like this over a bloated mess any day. Woodstock doesn't change the game, but it's a logical evolution for a band who's made slight but distinct alterations to their sound with each album. Whether it vibes with you or not, I feel their passion still, and that's more than I can say for many bands' effective reunion records.
