Midian is a near perfect album, it blends perfectly all that Cradle of Filth knew how to do so well, the grandiose keyboards, Dani's many voices, great riffs, perfectly written lyrics, a very interesting production and a very dark atmosphere. All of these are the key elements for a relentless record.

Whether Black Metal or not, this album is in my top-3 of all time best albums. The intro gives me goosebumps, Cthulhu Dawn is completely brilliant, Saffrons Curse too. Than we have the almighty Death Magik for Adepts. After that I can go further like this up untill the very end. That ending of this album mades it all completely brilliant. All heil to CoF and MIDIAN (especially Tortured Soul Asylum... Whraaaagggh!)

This is one band who had hype that I just could not understand, maybe they hit it big because of the vampire/goth gimmick, who knows, but for me the tunes dont stack up. Iam not the worlds biggest thrash/black/death metal fan but this album is very un accesable. This is a total chore to sit and listen to, and let me say that is not a good thing. Save your money or invest it elsewhere, I wish I had.

cof's most concrete album since they debuted, saffron's curse is an improved and solidified barthory aria, followed by runners in death magick and amor, typified by ghost, ending justifiably with veil from grace and tortured soul

This album is considered by many black metal fans, or non-black metal fans or any hipster essentially as Cradle of Filth's venture into more accessible black metal territory. After more than 15 years since I have heard it and after exploring their first 3 and subsequent albums, I still don't get why this album gets the sell-out stamp. Some of the stuff here is as heavy as the material on their first 3 records. There are a few hints to a more accessible black metal style, most present on song 8 (the album highlight) and song 10. The record is less black metallian, implements more gothic undertones, but it is still firmly planted in extreme metal territory. And Dani doesn't yet go over the top with his vocal delivery, which is a great thing. His voice, if used the wrong way is really annoying. The absolute album highlight is track 8. Also very strong: 2, 4, 5 and 11. Tracks 3, 6 and 10 are solid. Track 6 in particular has a killer guitar solo, one of the best in this genre. If you are a CoF fan that has not yet bought into the inherent elitism surrounding this band, do yourself a favor and continue listening to this band after their first 3 records. In the mind of a black metal elitist, becoming more accessible means sell-out. Regardless of the fact that the songs on this record might be as good as the ones before the supposed sell-out.

I've always felt like Midian's status as black sheep of CoF's discography has been understated. Bringing back original guitarist Paul Allender along with his obsession with other forms of extremity, Midian is a masterpiece of a blackened death metal album, bathed in gothic glory, blood, and vampyric sensuality. Dusk and Cruelty were also inexcusably classic albums, but it was Midian that truly opened the doors of success for Cradle of Filth.

I managed to somehow get my hands on a disc that contained the material off Cradle of Filth's fourth studio recording Midian a few years back - only to inevitably lose it due to reasons which will go undisclosed. In retrospect, this is a solid slab of extreme metal featuring haunting guitar melodies and keyboard parts (courtesy of Martin Powell) that are pretty much wealth-scented, if nothing out of the ordinary. Doug Bradley's narration on tracks like the remembered "Her Ghost in the Fog" sets the tone for this album properly, while vocalist Dani Filth shrieks with just enough passion and devilish intent. The songwriting formula CoF decided upon for Midian isn't anything worth babbling about, though I'd be lying if I said that the bandmates are simply average composers at best.

Cradle at theeir peak, and not just for the fact that it has the amazing Her Ghost In The Fog. This is a well crafted, emotional album with some fantastic lyrics, great instrumentals, and Dani's usual tragic and aggressive and emotionally intense vocal performance

By far Cradles best album, Her Ghost In The Fog alone makes this more than worth listening. The vocal work is absolutely insane and the keyboards dance around in the background but at times theres some stuff thats not really necessary, such as the ridiculously interlude song Satanic Mantra. Her Ghost In The Fog and Lord Abortion are the best songs off of here

Bumping this up to a 5. Satanic Mantra is completely useless, but other than that, every song in the album is excellent. Cthulu Dawn, Death Magick for Adepts, Lord Abortion and Tortured Soul Asylum are completely awesome.

This is probably the most accessibly work the band has put out, and they've managed to accomplish this without really sacrificing any of their key features. The album is still extreme metal, a chaotic mixture of brutal guitars and drums, screeching or doom-laden vocals, and a harmony of various keys and strings. This album feels the most complete and thought through of all the bands work I've heard. The overall quality here is definitely above the majority of this band's work, and if you're looking to try to get into them, this would be a good place to start. Aside from the poor decision of including "Santanic Mantra", the majority of the tracks here are top-notch.
