harry styles failed to bring memorable lyrics to the table and he didn't fully create his own identity with this album, wearing his inspirations on his sleeves perhaps a bit too much at times, but... having said that, pretty much every song on here is rock solid, filled with impactful vocals from start to finish, more-than-competent production, catchy melodies and even though the album is jammed with different genres, it doesn't feel like a mess, flows well and, more importantly, it shows styles' versatility. now, there's a loooot of improvement to do but for a debut album, well done! 3+

This debut is scary good. Harry has set the bar so unbelievably high for the other members that I don't think they can compete. His influences are clear yet he's able to craft a sound that's distinctly him. Can't wait to see what he does next.

Harry Styles is clearly going to be the Justin Timberlake of One Direction. That said, he's most likely going to be the only one out of the original members that ends up making decent and mature music that isn't exactly made-for-the-radio, nor will it be simple, cheesy acoustic ballads. He is doing what he wants and he is following a path that fits his taste, and I admire that about him.

The strategy used by Harry Styles to surpass his "singer from that boy band for teens" status was to release an album paying a huge amount of homages to classic British pop rock. In terms of execution, bravo Harry, especially "Sign of the Times" and its grand and wide instrumentation and performance. In terms of innovation, well there's virtually none: the worst tracks are bland reproductions of the greats, while the best, which are cool soft rock throwbacks, will inevitably remind the listener of something they have already heard before.
