On first listen, Suffocation appear to have their trademark style in place, and yet not a single song stands out of the lot, although the album easily rises above casual listens. This notion is further augmented by the sound production. Even though it ushers a good deal of the band's all too known intensity, and comes as much much better than the ever expanding cesspool of sound in the genre, it does not grant ...Of the Dark Light a character whatsoever. Having said the above, it is uncertain as to how the departure of two members from the Pinnacle of Bedlam lineup affected the merit of this album...

Musically this is not bad at all, and in fact contains some great wankery, however in basically all other factors.. FAIL. Memorable? Not even slightly. Production? Cleaner than your premier wankprog bands. That is where this album falls short, and becomes a clear sore thumb in Suffo?s repetoire.

This record is almost insultingly boring. I almost guarantee I could've fallen asleep to this album after about 8 minutes in. Suffocation brings absolutely nothing new to the table conceptually. The songwriting is so predictable and standard that it's almost aggravating and definitely disappointing. It's not even very listenable at points. When this album asks for your attention at certain points, you've probably completely tuned it out just because of how bland it's been up to that point.

Four years removed from the shot in the arm that was Pinnacle Of Bedlam, the seasoned veterans of Suffocation return with another solid foray into brutal technical death metal in ...Of The Dark Light. While it's not quite as energetic or boasting the rejuvenated songwriting of its predecessor, this record is not a bad one; there's plenty of moments of speed and adrenaline to satiate listeners, and while there's barely an experimentation or songwriting that can be considered original, the solidness of the compositions and the general intensity of the record make it very listenable and decently fun. You could easily say that this is the band on autopilot and get no dissent whatsoever, but that the record is still an enjoyable one is a testament to just how great Suffocation are at this style of death metal. They could do it in their sleep and still be better than a great number of them, and that's pretty much what they do here.
