Doesn't seem like the band is progressing in any direction, just stumping around in the same spot. Stagnation is the worst thing that could happen to a band.

Ixnay on the Hombre had a quick cycle and by now The Offspring are firing on all cylinders. The band has grown creatively and evolved musically but did not have the expected success. Americana comes to fill this void and brings all the charting and the billboard hits. The idea with Americana was not to reinvent the wheel and sound like a new band, as Dexter Holland noted in an interview. Lyrically, the album has the theme of the American culture in the late 90s, how America was distorted and where it was heading to. This is portrayed in the title track, 'Pretty Fly' as a witty assessment of white suburban teens embracing the hip-hop culture, and the fake way they are doing it in an effort to find an identity, and 'The kids Aren't Alright', a dark side to the life of suburban youth. Often humorous and regularly critical, the band aimed to offer positives and hope through the songs. Sognwritting is improved, production is great and energy at the usual high levels. Recommendations: "Why Don't You Get a Job", "The Kids Aren't Alright", "Pretty Fly", "Americana", "Walla Walla", "Have You Ever"

Quite simple, this was the first cd of a band I ever owned and more importantly, the first rock cd I ever owned. This cd was the catalyst that first made me want to pick up a guitar. Just from listening to "The Kids Aren't Alright" hearing a song that got me so pumped and excited and interested, just because of a guitar riff. Not only because of that, but these songs seem like some of the best that The Offspring have ever released to the date of this cd.
