Instances of a new musical direction from Faith No More were present as early as The Real Thing, helped by a new vocalist in Mike Patton. The band sought to perfect their newfound style come Angel Dust with flying colors, and that's considered to be not just an alt-metal masterpiece, but also FNM's finest hour. The San Francisco-based act marched onward with 1995's King for a Day... Fool for a Lifetime, a record that is incredibly diverse and just as spirited. The lack of Jim Martin may hurt the album's jackhammer-like status, though Trey Spruance is able to fill Jim's shoes without any problems. Adding to the diverse part, since there's definitely variety to be found on Faith's fifth full-length album, that means there's bound to be a track for everybody here. Not quite as memorable as its predecessor, but King for a Day... Fool for a Lifetime makes for an experience that's still difficult to forget. Angel recommends: "Evidence," "The Gentle Art of Making Enemies," "Caralho Voador," "Take This Bottle," "King for a Day," and "Just a Man"

Perhaps marred by the lack of enthusiastic riffing from Jim Martin or the chance that by this point in their career the band was starting to suffer the symptoms of in-fighting and attempting to stay fresh and experimental, King for a Day is synonomous with the decline of Faith No More for me. This is far from a bad record, just that it seemed to usher in a different spirit of the band that was a little far from the Real Thing and Angel Dust days. The diversity and experimental side of the band is still present, and there are still a fair share of great FNM tunes to make this more than listenable. (3.4/5)

Faith No More couldn't get any weirder than Angel Dust without confusing or alienating people so they dial back the strangeness a lot here. That being said, despite being more straightforward, it feels like a faithful followup to The Real Thing and is almost as good as that album. Despiting losing guitar wizard Jim Martin, Trey Spruance proved a capable replacement with crunchy riffs and fairly diverse playing if not as unique or fresh as Martin's. Patton unleashes his most melodic, refined vocal performance to date, and he sounds incredible here. "Take This Bottle" and "Evidence" are laid back tunes that bring out the best of Patton's smooth, sexy crooning, and "Get Out" and "The Gentle Art of Making Enemies" back up his more energetic performances with solid drumming and riffs. "Cuckoo For Caca" is their ode to anything like "Surprise! You're Dead!" but features their wildest vocals to date. "Just a Man" and "Star A.D." also bring out the best in their almost swing-like vibes and Patton's chaotic yet melodic, charming vocals. Despite being more 'safe' than Angel Dust and having a couple tunes that don't stand out, King For a Day is an excellent album from the group and has a plethora of enjoyable material as usual.

Inner band turmoil-- including the loss of longtime guitarist Jim Martin, a car crash, and the death of Roddy Bottum's father-- led to a three year gap between this record and Angel Dust. The latter managed to display genre eclecticism while maintaining flow; King for a Day doesn't, really. The two other big problems with the record are the production, which is dry and thankless (unlike Angel Dust's phenomenal sound), and the guitar playing-- it's rather boring and uninspired, which is surprising, considering Mr. Bungle's Trey Spruance was the player here (though he claims there was general confusion as to what direction the band wanted, and that, as well as his admitted lack of enthusiasm for most of the material, likely led to the issue). Still, there are plenty of great tracks ("The Gentle Art of Making Enemies," "Star A.D.," "Cuckoo for Caca") and Mike Patton's performance is phenomenal.

Faith No More crafted an album that cannot be pigeon-holed into one specif genre, instead hopping from the bands typical Alt. Metal, Country, Jazz, and countless others. A masterpiece to this Pencil's eyes if I do say so myself.
