I really enjoyed their other work, but this falls flat in many ways. The pieces are there, but the
meandering song structure leaves many tracks void of any reward. My ears have been trained to
follow the crescendo into some massive overarching melody, but this album kills any momentum the
second it's started. Inaccessibility be damned, this is just boring in so many places.

five listens in now, and this is actually growing off me.. overlong and samey, though I'm sure those who like it will tell you there's subtle nuance happening just about everywhere.. went from a 4 to a 3 in a day and a half.. will re-listen at some point, but really these are indie cult icons doing a winning lap that does not top Helplessness Blues.. so essentially, it's just a very decent indie folk record.

I'm all for a proggier Fleet Foxes, but I really wish they hadn't thrown out nearly all catchy songwriting along the way.

fleet foxes have ambition. nice. they funnel it into blowing up their songs into near-soundscapes that beautifully performed and produced, spiking the whole concoction with the usual crescendo-decrescendo that'll have you feeling emotions. but emotions of what? vague, wandering lyrics that read like poetic filler don't point the way, and neither do the beautiful arrangements. look at the colors on the cover. the musical spectrum on Crack-Up isn't any bigger. if you're down with that sort of thing, we can chill and feel vaguely non-trump american together and share a craft brew that probably has a bit more flavor. cheers

By all calculations, 'Crack-Up' should be Fleet Foxes' best work. Everything they are known for, every skill they have acquired, and every song-writing technique they have perfected comes together here, yet ya'll complain about some such whatever.

Helplessness Blues is the album you play to all of your friends and family. Crack-Up is the album you keep to yourself for those cherished nights when you're alone and pondering the meaning of it all.

Striking me first was the ability to pass through a six-year lapse, stick by that grand folkie feel they excelled in more than most before it quickly seemed dated-n-homogenized, and still no-prob triumph with a labyrinthine piece of pastoral majesty. Striking me second was the emphasis on ambition -- lengths, structures, flow-wise, odd passages, and so forth. The second, though it no doubt spices things up, tends to make this more knotty than it needs to be. Song-by-song songwriting suffers a bit and despite its winding it can also just become a blur of vanilla lushness. Uplifting, heavyhearted, rich, vanilla lushness.

Great folk record, with subtle instrumental arrangements and grandiose atmospheres. Not feeling
the hype tho. Helplessness Blues still is their best.. Maybe not in the mood, will spin again
later.

Most ambitious Fleet Foxes record yet and definitely their best crafted one to date. Lack of stylistic diversity might keep it from passing Helplessness Blues as their best album, but it's not far behind, and certainly no less deserving of "modern indie folk" classic status than their first two releases.

If Crack-Up is any indication, the members of Fleet Foxes have spent the past six years since Helplessness Blues maturing their songwriting skills and overcoming that albums' themes of inner anxiety. Crack-Up is the other side of that coin, a freeing and surprisingly eclectic work of art. Diverse instrumentation, classical influences, and grand arrangements make for some of the group's finest compositions yet. "Third of May," the two-part "Cassius," and the gorgeous "On Another Ocean" encompass these ideas in spectacular fashion. The beauty of Fleet Foxes' music is just as apparent as it ever was, with an abundance of musical flourishes and progressive song structures that make for some of the band's finest achievements thus far.
