A Second Opinion: Because @BandNewbac Made A Damn Good Album
Loss is an incredibly well-crafted album. From an instrumental point of view, all involved did an excellent
job. Each member of the group brings something to the table, whether they be a vocalist or a "Maker of Noises."
The segment from 6:02 to 17:44 was definitely a highlight for me, going from fingerstyle acoustic folk
to mellow jazz to a more percussion-and-piano-focused portion all leading to a drone composition. 2 more great
segment go from 30:53 to 35:29 and from 37:10 to 48:14, where indie rock, post-punk,
dream pop, and psych influences abound (these are a few of my favorite things~). The middle drone/noise
section is where the album tends to drag for me a bit. While I understand that this bit was included to signify
"the feelings of loss and isolation," it did go on for a bit longer than I would've liked. While I did enjoy the
constant flow of the album, another qualm I had was that it does feel a bit aimless at times. An LP with a single
track usually denotes that the composer wants his piece to be ingested as a whole and not in individual parts,
but I cannot help but feel that this album would have benefited from being broken apart into maybe 4 to 5 tracks.
The album, I feel, suffers from this long-form style.
Overall, Boring Bathtimes's new album is quite the listen and its subdued beauty makes it worth a spin.
