the mountain goats have always been one of the most consistent folk bands to ever do it, with lyrical concepts that are simply fastinating and folk music with the usage of guitars to create the perfect tone and mood for the concepts to shine through. on goths, and after countless great albums, they finally crafted a near-perfect one, perhaps one of their best since "sunset tree" but with no guitars whatsoever, which is incredible. it's folk music in its purest form for the most part, which also gives the album a theatrical feeling that fits like a glove, as if we were in a theatre. it's musically ambitious, it's funny, it's sad, it's catchy. amazing! 4.5

I liked Beat the Champ. It was a fun Mountain Goats album, but I surely didn't love it. When I heard John Darnielle was switching the theme from wrestling to gothic culture for his latest album, I wasn't sure what to make of it. Right off the bat, though, Goths blows its predecessor out of the water. With no guitars to speak of on the album, Darnielle's songwriting is more focused, and the whole thing is gorgeously orchestrated. Upbeat horns and jazzy sections are glittered throughout the surprisingly bright album: probably the exact opposite of what a typical goth would listen to. It's satirical, full of life, and surprisingly accessible for a Mountain Goats album.

Much overrated. Profusely pretentious. The first song I actually enjoy quite a bit with its atmosphere and mood,
then it goes into some sort of hipster coffee shop recycled cookie cutter bullcrap. It exudes an unearned air of
confidence whilst spitting intentional rhymes of the same repeated word. Name-drops of hipster locales, self-
professed ideology and style, and modest bragging are just a few of its facades of superiority. I'm not falling for
it. Adding jazz and rhythm-defying lyrics for a stroke to the ego is bad. As Linkin Park once said, "got a DJ in
your group just for credibility." This is that same shit on a different day. Don't get me wrong, though. In the face
of the music's glaring character, this album is good. It's just not that good. This album is good. It's just not that

An instant career highlight,
Goths is the best Mountain Goats
album in over a decade, and
absolutely the apex of the
conceptual bent he's been on the
last 3 albums. Alternately
hilarious and heartbreaking, and
more musically rich and
adventurous than ever before,
Darnielle has elevated himself
from esteemed elder statesmen
back to a vital talent with a new
trick or 2 to show us yet. All
hail.
