The ending to "Shades of Emerald Fields" is reason enough to check this EP out. Everything else is serviceable if unremarkable. If you get a version with the bonus tracks, you've essentially got an LP on your hands, which adds some serious mileage, with "Black Erotica" being an earlier version of "12" from Brave Murder Day. Definitely a curious listen.

Katatonia's first recording since 1993 was the brief but pivotal album, For Funerals to Come...., which found the ever more confident Swedes now capable of knocking out desolate doom/death anthems quite effortlessly. To wit, the opening colossus that is "Funeral Wedding" doesn't even feel like it lasts all of eight minutes, and the comparatively brief "Shades of Emerald Lies" is perhaps even more complex in terms of shifting tempos and riffs -- all of them invariably embellished by gloriously bleak and morose lyrics. In turn, the two-and-a-half-minute title track is achingly gorgeous in its simplicity, its whispered words of unfathomable grief making way to the basic instrumental "Epistle," and last but not least, we have the double dose of melancholy that is "Black Erotica" and "Love of the Swan" that brings this album to a close. Another successful Katatonia record if you ask me.
