2.5 average | McMegaMountain | February 23rd 17 | Self indulgent wank fest. I've only managed to get through the full album twice, with a
lot of false starts. It's overly long for no apparent reason, other than the fact that he
"can." His balladry is boring. Lyrically its self deprecating to a larger degree than
Honeybear. It's a chore to listen to - imagine of Michael Gira did a Swans album entirely
made up of crooning and no instrumentation. I can get behind a folk album by just about
anyone, but this is a bare bones bitch fest. Way to spoil your rise to fame Tillman,
you'll join the hall of shame with Animal Collective, Of Montreal and M83 - bands that
had a great peak, then purposely misdirected their trajectory to result in some kind of a
homogenous shit sandwich of tepid tunes.
Dreamgazing doesn't understand what I'm saying, they are too much of a FJM guzzler to see
that it's clearly an album too steeped it's own hype to actually be an engaging piece of
music. Tillman's very into himself, and it shows on this record. Anco, Of Montreal, and
M83 did the exact same thing after reaching their peak - Junk was a tremendous misfire
that Gonzalez will unlikely rebound from, Anco's last two have been derivative of their
worst pieces of music in the past, and they show no inkling of changing for the times,
and don't even get me started on Of Montreal.

0.0 | dreamgazing | March 1st 17 | Mountain's analysis is pretty shite, as is the unnecessary dismissal of perfectly good bands. Album is going to take some time to sink in though- Josh Tillman is full of himself, no doubt about that.

0.0 | EvilEyez | April 9th 17 | The everybrody's favorite hopstar returns with the trimmer beard and now speak with no lice, this is the sound of
the mounting cabin and the mighty raw red wood in the pale moonshine. The full marks rolled out to the fatherjohn.

4.0 excellent | FirstStrikeIsDeadly | June 4th 18 | I actually really like the political direction taken here. Maybe it's a little pretentious, but I generally think he does a good job of encapsulating the sense of division and hopelessness in the social climate in the era of this album's release. Whether touching ("Pure Comedy", "Two Wildly Different Perspectives"), ironic and satirical ("Total Entertainment Forever", "Ballad of the Dying Man"), or just bitter ("Leaving LA", "The Memo"), this album tackles its themes in an engaging way. This album's main fault is that there's just a bit of tendency towards plodding monotony, something that could've been fixed if about 10 to 15 minutes of the album were chopped out or certain sections had key or tempo changes to help keep certain songs more interesting interesting.

3.0 good | TimeMuffin | April 13th 17 | I don't understand how this is the album where people think Tillman is a pretentious asshole and not anything else the guy's done. It's as strong and likable of a record as his other projects.

4.0 excellent | JesusCage | April 8th 17 | This is just too monotonous for such a long time duration, although it's not bad it tends to be boring.
EDIT: And after that, if you let it, it grows on you.. except leaving LA, that one is intended to be listened once.

4.0 excellent | theBonerKing | January 24th 17 | Prepare your bodies for the greatest album ever known to man.
Edit 3/15: I'm a bit saddened by these low ratings... Nonetheless I'm going to wait for the official release and give it an open-minded shot. I'm guessing that this album is intentionally divisive on Tillman's part and while I know he's not for everyone I still love the shit out of I Love You, Honeybear and I have a feeling I'm going to adore this too. Fuck the haters.

0.0 | petreemc | January 5th 22 | Begins with birth and fills it’s space with life and ends with death and then whatever is on the other side of that.
Near the end, this album depicts that which we as people could never see in our lifetime: being face to face with
humanity’s death. Somehow though, Father John Misty comes out on the other side feeling just as indifferent as
he did in the beginning.

4.5 superb | MeetMeAtBarItalia | July 1st 17 | This is an incredibly ambitious singer-songwriter record, and an artistic success in every possible way. I understand why some people find it insufferable, but its self-awareness, insightful look at modern life, and beautifully meditative instrumental approach won me over rapidly. It is a depressing album, as it never shies away from the harsh reality we live in, yet the cynical humor, romantic undertones and Tillman's soothing vocals prevent it from becoming overwhelming. Carefully produced and written, Pure Comedy just impresses me on every level.

1.5 very poor | PistolPete | June 22nd 17 | What a chore to sit through. This is like if Elton John decided to become a cynical curmudgeon who shakes his fist at the clouds all day and sings about whatever the fuck is on his mind at a given time instead of just saying it normally.

3.5 great | TheManMachine | May 16th 17 | I don't dare read through the album-associated essay and will go ahead and paraphrase a forumer cuz it's just so brilliantly spot-on: 'sounds like a philosophy major who's come round to pay too much for an eighth.' But when he's pickin' apart all of our demented monkey ways and this big ol godless rock we've inhabited, this self-affirmed 2017 fake-named speck of a white guy is so calmly eloquent-n-biting that his smug blowhard turns perceptive persuader. Commentary+candor near full-time graceful and he steadily proves himself superb at blurring sincere and not, the plain yet grand arrangements and track protractions and "10-verse chorusless diatribe" approach kinda drowsy but are exquisitely provocative. Blips of backward psych and internet androids help seal the cynicism, though when he turns the critique on himself or smoothly serenades his "Smoochie" the realness refreshingly cuts through. Halfway through lofty 74-minute monster and after 13-minute aforementioned chorusless diatribe: "I've got the world by the balls / Am I supposed to behave?". I'm just glad he's no longer talking about cum.
