More experimental than previous releases. Songs are less aggressive and many follow a linear structure
working up to dense and fulfilling climaxes. This may grow on me yet.

EDIT: This has grown on me.

A Hairshirt Of Purpose is a fine example of how to slow down and quiet down your sound without castrating it and retain what made you an enjoyable band in the first place. Pile do a lot of great things here with their revamped melodic presence, as opener "Worms" and supporting single "Dogs" (which comes complete with enriching usage of strings) will gladly show you, but that doesn't mean they can't bring the tempo up or are somehow devoid of energy, as the powerful "Hissing For Peace" and riffy lead single "Texas" exemplify. Of course, the best thing about the band remains vocalist/guitarist Rick Maguire, who is the strong and steady backbone that the band's material has rested on these last couple of records. All this said, there are some slightly boring parts here and there, and though the album is only forty-five minutes, it does feel a little long for what they were going for. Still, this record is a logical and enjoyable evolution from You're Better Than This and as such is a pretty lovely listen.

Some the tunes on here are top-notch and keep me coming back daily. Texas, hair shirt, and Worms
are my favorites! The different songwriting angle on the longer, slower songs is also quite good
and I was surprised how well they worked. Pile is a unique band and I'm definitely
excited to see them go down whatever path they choose.
