girlfriend actually died in a car crash and didnt write an emo album. also used to set himself on fire during shows. underrated

Underoath's second effort goes Christian black metal and it works quite well. Taylor vocals work pretty well in this style and Chris Dudley gave the group a massive bump with the atmosphere presented. the album is surprisingly dark for a Christian album at the time, apparently dealing with Taylor guilt of causing the death of his then girlfriend in a car crash. regardless this album is a massive step up from their debut (and a really exceptional black metal album)

this is bad, but it's not awful. i actually do like the weird song structures. i just wish there was more variance in the instrumentals.

Underoath proves to be better metal band, than they are a Post-hardcore band.rStylistically ,,Cries of the Past'' is very similiar album to the ,,Act of Deppresion'' (mix of Black metal with metalcore and (Death metal here and there)), but it has drastically more to offer.
,,Cries of the past'' is album filled with intense vocal delivery, ambitious songwriting and phenomenal instrumentation...Corey Steger tastefully shows his guitar skill, while he's changing in between groovey, thrashey riffs and fast tremolo picking. Aaron Gillespie lays down some great rhythms and grooves on the drums and when it's his time to shine, he does really well.... Even though this album is instrumental beast, it has it's problems too, Let's summarize it:
1)While Dallas Taylor is really solid vocalist, his slow unenergetic growling in some parts takes more from the album than it actually adds.
2)Underoath are not capable of writing memorable and consistent songs that are 8 minutes, every song has it's awesome moments, but could be 5/6 minutes long.r3)MESS - there is too many unnecessary parts in every song...For example who thought those acoustic guitar parts go well with the rest of the album..rPlus Trash lyricism, but that's expected

This would be a 3.5 were it not for the impressive atmosphere the album manages to create. This was Underoath at their most aggressive, showcasing their abilities to combine elements of hardcore with black and death metal. In fact, there is a fairly close resemblance to Extol's 'Burial' (although not quite as professionally executed). Excellent album

The old carnation of Underoath owns the new post-hardcore carnation of them. The awesome tremelos, awesome vocals, awesome keys/synths, awesome guitar riffs and awesome guitar solos is all it needs to be metal. Very enjoyable album.

The worst Underoath release to date. I don't know why they had black-metal style song lengths on this CD, I don't know how Dallas thought his screaming sounded good, and I don't know how the recording engineer lived with himself after helping release this shit pile.

For 5 songs, this is a long album. Lyrically, not too impressive, although I think "Cries of the Past", the closing track, does end the album well. I'm not into the Christian aspect of most of the bands out there with religious themes, no offense to anyone. but I though Dallas did portray a sad story well in the last song. Favorite song, by far, is the opener, "The Last"...like a review said, the solo, although simple, and easy and fun to play, is just so catchy.

It feels weird listening to this album due to the fact that Underoath sound nothing at all like this now. It is like listening to a different band. One of Underoath's earlier releases and one of their best. This is purily deathcore. Not metalcore or screamo...deathcore. Every song goes over 5 minutes, the average songs going for about 7 minutes. This is probably why there is only 5 songs on the album.
It is worth checking this album out as it is very unique and it is interesting to hear what the boys of Undeoath used to sound like.
