I appreciate the fact they're distancing themselves from all-too-clean and heavily compressed production, it actually makes this easier to stomach than anything they've released since The Cleansing. The vocals especially sound like one take, unlayered, like shit but in a way that works most of the time, especially on Hold Me Up, Hold Me Down where he sort of plays around with throwing tantrum either too close or too far from the mic. There's not enough song power, too much brooding pseudo-slowcore (might be a plus to some i guess, it's atmospheric, but it's Suicide Silence the expectations are probably uhh different ones) but it's not bad all told.

It's not their Korn+Deftones assimilation that's total crap, it's the synthetically heavy yet flat as a board production. Personally I got a kick out of the extreme-nu blend; at least until overstated screams and miserable mosh angst wear ya down -- from the opening wank solo and grunting "fuck yeah" to the impish walk-n-whistle exit they at least bring some character and chug-chug chutzpah, crude and cringy and muddled it may be. Gotta give it up for those varietal vox too. Singing funny if not sustainable, screeches deathly and close to the mic, shouts very very tough, raw being-dragged-into-hell chorus and far from the mic incoherent hardcore guy impression authentically unhinged and a hoot.

this is just deathcore stuffed to the brim with metalcore tropes. you have the somewhat aggravating metalcore vocal changes, slow 'introspective' songs, yet all manages to be dreadfully boring. all with a production that makes this serve as great background music. also, you can't forget all of the deathcore tropes that you all know and love.

Sounds like they discovered the music of Deftones & Glassjaw, but without the talent, or understanding of what made such music so great, they created an abomination. Murky soundscapes, with screams that are just "there" devoid of anger, passion or even any real tactility, singing like a shower singer version of Steven Wilson at times "Conformity" (ironic given how generic the band have been, basically a metronome of mediocre deathcore) other times completely lost in the attempt at a Chino Moreno impression, gone awry like a bad american idol audition.

An odd collision between nu metal and deathcore. Worth listening to at least once just to experience what happens when a band is seemingly completely lost and fallen off the tracks. There are just so many strange things going on from the nu metal grunts/deranged clean vocals, the odd juxtaposition between down tuned death and nu metal riffs, some things that remind me of Fred Durst/Limp Bizkit trying too hard to be weird, vocals reminiscent of Jonathan Davis to a random bombastic wah solo. It just feels like they are forcing the fact that they are either depressed or deranged way too hard on the listener and forgot to actually write meaningful songs with thoughtful composition. All in all it feels like a stripped down deathcore base with 2000s nu metal sauce slathered all over.

I've got no problem with Suicide Silence experimenting with their style. After all, they've always been, like most deathcore bands, absolutely terrible - change would be welcome. However, though this record is stylistically different than their previous efforts, it's just as bad. It attempts to combine nu-metal and deathcore, but falls flat on its face with subpar performances, awful songwriting, and bad lyrics. It's, in a way, oddly compelling to hear a band so obviously intruding upon an area they have no business being in - like Metallica with St. Anger. Lots of unintentional hilarity abounds as Eddie laughs and falsettos his way through globby, murky guitar passages. This is a mess tonally, too. What were they going for the whistling at the end? Why the random interspersed band dialogue? Why the ten-second wah solo to open the disc before the heavy verse in "Doris?"

It's weird because the last song actually kind of sounds like Suicide Silence. The idea of combining deathcore and nu metal sounds interesting in theory; odd grunts and squeals spat in rhythm to simple down-tuned riffs, add some breakdowns--think Slayer's Diabolus In Musica, but rwith gutteral vocals? But Suicide Silence didn't even try do that so w/e. It's like they made a whole album consisting of the parts of nu metal tracks nobody actually likes, and forgot all the riffs.

Little addition of cringe: ,,Doris'' - meeeeh ,,Silence'' - I am just laughing out loud ,,Listen'' - How can anyone even come up with song like this, God the production is atrocious ,,Dying In A Red room'' - I got to the point where I am praying for some extremely underwhelming SS deathcore. ,,Hold Me Up, Hold Me Down'' - Starting to have extremely gorey visions about how to do the suicide ,,Run'' - Well atleast he is sorry ,,The Zero'' - I've come to a realisation, they actually think their making experimental metal, well then this is pretty much like ,,The zero''/5 ,,Conformity'' - Actually decent tune, and then I've read the lyrics and cringed ,,Dont be careful and the rest of that shit'' - This is it...The point where I pressed play on Lynch's Eraserhead and erased every little part of this shit from my brain.
