Considering Burial's streak of great EP's in the past few years, it was only a matter of time before it was broken. Young Death/Nightmarket is a disappointingly lukewarm effort void of anything memorable. This is Burial's weakest effort to date by a large margin.

Right then, what's all this? I'm gonna go ahead and say that this is Burial on auto-pilot, which is better than most artist's auto-pilot, but it is a bit perplexing that it has been almost a full three years since his last EP and this is what he ends up with. Is he out of ideas? One could easily think so. Young Death/Nightmarket, while not bad, is a somewhat haphazard listen and feels like it was hastily thrown together at the last minute to satiate clamoring fans. The only thing I can say is this: if it takes him ten years without releasing music to put out something that matches or tops Untrue, I'll happily wait those ten years.

The Nightmarket's synthwavey bits are quite nice to hear coming from Burial, but it's clearly not the most engaging synthwave we've been granted. Young Death has a interesting haunting mood for the first few seconds, but then nothing is developed during the rest of the track. At least it's better than Subtemple/Beachfires.

A lot of sudden shifts during the songs make this a somewhat confusing listen. Especially on night market, it sounds like a collection of different ideas presented as one song. rNow if he took each of those ideas and developed them into individual songs, gave us an album/longer ep, then I would easily bump this up at least 2 points. Because there are great ideas here, they are just not given the attention and structure they deserve.
