Phenomenal screamo. Musically, the best screamo album I've heard, however there is one slight flaw. The actual screaming vocals themselves can be a bit weak at times, and seem to always be overshadowed by the crescendo's in the background. Still good vocals, but seem kind of meh in the end. However, the post-rock aspect does blend beautifully with emo texture; brilliant and atmospheric intros lead into heart-aching screamo breakdowns. Album is awesome.

More bands need to blend post-rock structures with emo, because this is fucking brilliant. It's energetic, it's calm, it's cathartic. The build-ups in this album are perfect, and when they finally come to a head, it's like a floodgate just broke and you are being swept away by thousands of tons of force. This also has the most powerful drumming I've heard off of an emo record (even if my emo experience is limited).

I remember hearing about this band in a chat room (don't ask me how that happened) about 6 years ago as a recommendation along side Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Audio Center. Anyway, I loved Godspeed and still do so I took the invitation to look into the bands. Audio Center turned out to be an indie/emo combo that fulfilled its purpose whenever it was needed during those tumultuous teenage years. These bands have been in all of our lives - admit it. City of Caterpillar was a bit elusive though and remained on a list of bands I wanted for about 3 years until I finally broke down and ordered it. Even with the lapse of time and even now City of Caterpillar is one of very favourite albums of any genre. It perfectly combined two mild obsessions: instrumental indie rock (GYBE, Mogwai, Explosions in the Sky) and experimental hardcore (Refused, Botch, Pg. 99). Oh man did this album floor me. Even now I still love this album which is not something I can say for a lot of music that I listened to in High School (or even music I listened to last week). For some people this will never be appealing but for any one who had any interest in the before referenced bands, City of Caterpillar is the watermark. The most accessible hardcore vocals, the most incredible instrumental crescendos, lo-fi muddy recordings, all in their only full length release. Legendary in my mind.

The perfect mix of fast hardcore riffs with epic post-rock build up's, City Of Caterpillar are fucking insane. A highlight in the history book of emo, this album is a masterpiece of emotional music.

Pretty intense screamo/hardcore that's not so unsimilar from Circle Takes the Square. The one thing I absolutely love about these guys though is their longer songs which take on a post-rock esque structure and just build up and build up before exploding. You can definately sense the power and emotion pouring through this one. One of my favorite "core" albums ever and I think it's a shame that these guys didn't release more material because I don't think I could ever get tired of this stuff. Recomended to any fan of Circle Takes the Square or Hardcore music in general.

I like to say that this record is the soundtrack of a really ill and disturbed mind who have to experience a lot of harsh moments in a short period of time. Even becoming a chaotic and depressive record, it helps a lot to struggle against some negative thoughts. A landmark in the genre and one of the best experiences that music delivers to us.

Maybe I'm just missing out on what makes a post-hardcore (PH) album "A" classic worthy PH album since I've yet to expand my PH palette, but I think I'm getting there. This record still reveals an impressive musicianship like that of Circle Takes the Square's As the Roots Undo, but still needs further listening on my end.
