Mors Principium Est maintain their supremacy in the melodeath genre with what may arguably be their best, most varied work since their breakout 2005 hit 'The Unborn'. Varied, impassioned and most definitely heady (both in the mix and otherwise) 'Embers of a Dying World' may not rewrite the playbook, but it sure as shit checks all the boxes and then some.

Honestly, I thought the first two proper songs from this album were really bland, uninspired stuff. The cheesy symphonics didn't do much but annoy me even more, and the musicianship was too predictable to be called adventurous. Then somehow the band have a complete turnaround in terms of creativity and deliver one of the album's stand-out highlights, "Death is the Beginning". I think from this point on is where the band really show their strengths. At times I'm reminded of Karybdis in terms of musical technique and style, but this certainly turns out to be a very decent melodeath record. Pity that it starts in a boring way.

A solid melodeath album that feels great for the first few listens but loses some steam after that. Many of the riffs sound familiar and a lot of songs blend into one another with a similar songwriting approach and structure. That being said, Mors Principium Est make it very clear they are good at what they are doing here. Everything is solid but the experience as a whole comes off a bit lackluster due to the repetition. The most memorable song here, by far, is Death Is The Beginning. Everything from the lyrics, theme, vocal interplay and musicianship is spot on. It is kind of a melodeath ballad with a very sad subject matter but damn is it borderline perfect. The album could have used more moments like that to break up the more standard melodeath tracks.

A step or two above most of their contemporaries, Embers of a Dying World shows Mors Principium Est doing what they do best, which is solid, keyboard-laden melodic death metal. Granted, this is pretty much the landscape of most like-minded bands, but with a few albums under their belt, Mors Principium Est are able to execute with a touch more prowess.
