This is true madness. Uncharted territory. Here be dragons (and beasts far worse). Precision and chaos co-exist, but not peacefully. This is a jazz holocaust, a prog genocide. This is more than tech death. This is Beefheart metal. It might serve as lobby muzak in hell. But this snarling, gnashing abomination was never meant for mortal ears. Approach at your own risk.

This album sodomizes my mind every time I listen to it, but I love it so much. This album is definitely not for the unprepared, as the music is incredibly technical and dissonant. The vocalist also sounds like his mind is slowly being torn apart. This album is definitely very hit-or-miss, but it's also a grower. I love this album so much, though. So yeah.

it's near unlistenably bizarre heaviness it's only weak trait, this album is some of the best death metal I have ever heard. the drummer sounds like he is on infinite bpm and the guitars are giant sludgehammers of doom with high caliber rapid fire machine guns attached to them conjuring some sort of dark ritual

"obscura" holds the esteemed award of 'changed the way i listen to music'. the aural equivalent of blundering through a dark forest, wisps of caustic fog burning your skin and hostile faceless creatures snarling at you from within the blackness. a perfect record.

Gamechanger. Gorguts took what Atheist and Cunic inteuduced with jazzy DM, and fused it with the beutal twch-death approach of Suffocation and Cryptopsy. On top they added their own focus on psychotic rhythms and dissonance creating a completely unique sound while breaking all the musical rules in existance. Only downfall is the length.

It is undeniable that "Obscura" is one of the greatest masterpieces in Metal history. Without being overrated or anything, the record has a unique face, and an identity difficult to be imitated or vaunted by other bands. I've listened a few times to set an opinion about it, and despite having a great respect for this album and the band, i can't consider "Obscura" their best album. Being too big, i feel bored at times, but not because this is bad, but because it's very condescended. Maybe my opinion changes in the future, but now my feeling comes down to this.

There's the norm, there's the different and unique, and then there's Gorguts' Obscura. A drastic shift from their standard death metal affair in Considered Dead and the techical death metal direction of The Erosion of Sanity, Obscura practically invents avant-garde death metal. Opener title track is a toss up of pop squealing guitar riffs, schizophrenic solos, tortured vocals, and chaotic blast beats, and despite these many strange factors, it's a brilliant track, but it does not set up the album as a whole. "Clouded" is a nine minute masterpiece in exercising doom metal and a menacing atmosphere, and from a lyrical standpoint, the song is very dark. "Sweet Silence" opens up with an impressive, dense bassline and is then accompanied by stop-and-go riffs and blast beats gallore. "Faceless Ones" may be a primary example of the weird sounds the guitars make on this album, and "Earthly Love" reminds me of Covenant-era Morbid Angel with its drum-driven rhythms and tempo, but it's also crammed with very eerie accoustic passages and sounds. No one song is the same, and the album is blooming with variety and further complimented by a beautiful production job (everything sounds dense and heavy as fuck yet full of clarity). The technicality and complexity displayed here is truly alien even in death metal, and while it may be difficult to swallow at first, but what lies underneath is one of the most compelling musical experiences ever recorded.

This is just mind bending. Like there are wonky as hell distorted riffs, ugly gutturals, incredibly intricate but paced drumming. It's mysterious and weird but it rocks. Only neg is that artwork still frightens me heh

This is a masterpiece, pure madness in audio form...exhausting and irritating, but also totally unique and fascinatingly...beautiful (?). And it is certainly not the album to recommend to someone who wants to get familiar with death metal ^^

To liken this to other bands that I have heard I would say its general sound is akin to Morbid Angel with some of the wanky elements of The Dillinger Escape Plan thrown in. The first two are an absolute killer one two punch to start this record out. Pointing this out is by no means saying that the album steps down after this; it kicks just as much ass. One minor thing that I could say is that Clouded is very slow, almost like a stoner song; its good, but I don't know if it really needed to be nine and a half minutes. Again, not a bad song, it may just get a bit old by the end if you're not in the right mindset. I will say that Clouded does work very well in the context of the full album, as it gives you a break from the high speed wankery, making it exciting all over again when it returns in the next song. Its very rare that an album can stay consistently great throughout, but this manages to do it.rFuck, this is an awesome album; its gotta be one of, if not the, best death metal album I've ever heard.

Brutal yoga metal! I can understand how this is controversial, but if you unfavorably compare it to free jazz, then you don't know much about music or words. Anyway, excellently sickening guitarcraft. They obviously have extreme chops, but this isn't confusing or challenging to listen to--the individual parts are convoluted but the structures are formulaic. The way everything is pieced together, though, is ecstatic.

As much as I'd like to give a 5/5 rating to every Gorguts album, I feel it'd be best for me to just rate this one. Each Gorguts album has a distinct personality and Obscura is an earthy, well-rounded and inspiring piece of music that Gorguts presented in perfection. You'll be hard-pressed to find a band as consistently ground-breaking and influential as this band.

At first when I listened to this, I was a little skeptical about the reputation this
album had, receiving 5/5's and 10/10's. After listening more though, finally I just, got
it. Everything just sort of, made sense, and it was awesome! There are only two reasons
I did not give this a higher score, and that is because...
(1) The vocals are not terrible, but not amazing either, they were a little off to me.
If Kyo of Dir en grey growled in this album it would be perfect.
(2) I'm not gonna lie, it can be a bit to handle all at once sometimes, which makes it
