Mary Halvorson at her more straightforward is not her most curious. And for sure it does not need to be. For all its sombre moments, 'Away With You' is mostly an assertion of her compositional and band leader prowess, all smooth and cool, able to concoct genuinely great songs like it's Tuesday. Even though this album is mainly a display of easy vibes and instrumental showoffiness, it still packs several bangers and Halvorson's signature all-around-the-world influences.

She knows how to do it all, the jazz. Playful, meditative, dissonant, delicate, or completely abandoning her guitar to the batshit-craziness of her backing band. The record does lose itself in some avant stuff from time to time, but it manages to (mostly) keep it interesting.
