The middle part of the album rips so hard. The run from Apocalypse to Observed/Observer is the shit.

Boring. There were moments where my eyes lit up hoping for the melody to progress but was let down almost every time. Zao have a habit of puting pauses inbetween their riffs or settling for some repetitive riff in this album which makes it feel like to me a "safe option" where they fail to take a melody further. It's not bad though - fans would be able to convince themselves this is great.

Zao has never been a band worth the effort to listen or analyse for me. A run-of-the-mill core hodgepodge of theirs was and still is a testament to a lot that is wrong with the style. At their most common a boring, one-dimensional slog, overly reliant on energy and atmosphere, where no skill lies, and at their worst an actively irritating presence. However, for at least this one record, having spent some time apart, ruminating on newness and reinvention, Zao managed to pull through and deliver. It is a rather disquieting feeling to hear all the elements previously forming absolutely dreadful listen now suddenly coming together to form something this cohesive. Hiatus really helped. Hope this mastery over writing and performance finesse comes back at some point, as this was a blast.

It does everything it does well, but to me is missing some of the weird experimentation of past albums such as Self-Titled and Liberate.

This may be me getting used to the band and the vocals, but my taste for this grew quite steadily throughout the album. I had trouble with the first couple tracks, but the middle of the album is fantastic and the end is not too bad either. Really interesting, proggy metalcore/hardcore reminiscent of a lot of amazing bands out there. A re-listen is needed, the album may become a grower. 3.8

Surprised at the lack of attention. Not the best 2016 has to offer, but a very solid metalcore release with a stellar vocal performance and catchy, melodic tunes. Can't go wrong jamming this one.

This really rips. The melodic elements and cleans I heard in the singles worried me initially, but they blend in without a hitch with the caustic Zao we all rknow and love from the 90's. They haven't missed a beat in the last two decades.
