This album seems to be pretty divisive, I suppose from people who were expecting more typical or "complete" black/death metal, or perhaps those who just aren't into this style. I can understand not digging it (not saying "urgh you just don't get it"), but personally I'm really fucking feeling this one. Takes the sound of their EPs to a whole new level, and the enhanced atmospheric and even sludgy influence to it is really sounding unique, not so much like it's copying anything from any current or past black/death/sludge/post-metal circles.

Bolzer enjoyed a surprising amount of buzz in the black metal scene and their fans have been eagerly awaiting a formal debut album for ages. Heck, their EPs were always solid and airtight when it comes to flow and construction. Well, turns out they really are an EPs-only band, because 'Hero' is as its ugly cover art, flashy and epic, but ultimately not much to look for.

A mixed bag containing individual tracks and moments that could be described as good and interesting, but it's all dragged down by meandering non-riffs and boredom. The lyrics teeter the same edge of kind of good and annoyingly stupid: Pillars of oak fuck the hymen of Ego, OK buddy.

Bolzer bring their more ritualistic characteristics to the forefront of their music. Gonna disappoint anyone with rigid expectations for a Black/Death record, but nevertheless is a solid and intriguing shift in Bolzer's sound. Despite its occasional monotony and divisiveness, Hero is unmistakably a Bolzer record at its heart

I Understand that people will probably either love or hate it. I loved it. The clean vocals are part of
the charm for me, It suits well with their mythic/epic themes and aesthetics. rIt's an absolute
GROWER of an album. I didn't really like the singles until I've heard them a few times and after the
first full listen, the album left me with mixed fillings. But it grew on me more and more with each
listen. It's a fantastic and unique album. The only song I don't really like is the title track. Not sure
what to make of it yet.

Unfortunate to see the singles dropped were the best songs on the album. The album suffers from severe repetition issues. Bolzer's trademark frantic riffing from the EPs is almost completely gone. Clean vocals are abundant and not all too great; the tribal nature works in moderation but not as a backbone for the band's aggressive sound. Still a fun album but a huge letdown from what we have seen from the band.
