Da Drought 3 is a lengthy, two-disc mammoth that features nothing more than borrowed beats from other artists and Wayne's creative and very, very stoned rhymes. It has no reason for being as good as it is, but somehow, the album's iceberg-pacing lulls you into a stoned stupor that you just can't manage to get out. If it wasn't for M.I.A., this would easily be the best album of 2007. Roll some blunts, and check out this shit.

Lil' Wayne's amazing run of mixtapes in the mid 2000's made him one of the most prolific rappers ever. What's even more shocking than the output he produced, was that he was actually able to make these tapes memorable. His hook on Ride 4 My N!ggaz inspired a huge hit song almost a decade later. Full of aggressive, competitive bars over stolen beats from mostly ringtone rappers. Wayne authoritatively makes these songs his, and controls almost the entirety of the 27 tracks by himself (save for good contributions from Curren$y and Juelz, plus the intro of Nikki Minaj). There are so many classic quotables, however the album begins to wear down heavily towards the end of the second disc. Still, an incredible accomplishment for a mixtape.

Two full discs without much space wasted - a fun, contemporary-beat stealing, generally ridiculous ride. It's seemingly endless lyrically, jam-packed with classic lines, prodigious references, numerous non-sequiturs - yet one of my favorites simply goes: "Beef, yes / chest, feet / tag, bag / blood, sheets / yikes, yeeks / great scott!". He's just that good, and the fact is a lot of it sounds like just fuckin' around. His skill tends to get obscured by accusations of (lack of) subject matter, obnoxiousness, extreme use of "bitch", etc. - I see a wordsmith with an uninhibited personality who loves rhyming for the sake of rhyming, and again, is probably just fuckin' around.

For an album containing no original production, this ain't half bad. Featuring 21 tracks of pure spittin' rhymes, Da Drought 3 actually contains some quality hip-hop. However, the long tracklisting does stretch out for quite a while and can eventually become monotonous. While Lil Wayne is a master at creating clever (though many times nonsensical) hooks, some of the raps in here are just plain dumb. Nevertheless, Da Drought 3 has some real solid stuff. And of course, like every other Wayne album, listening is always better with a blunt in hand.
