Tomahawk's Mit Gas features the type of experimentation you've come to expect from a musical project involving Mike Patton, although a melting pot of subtlety, heaviness, and minimalism is also present on this release. The style of the supergroup basically falls under either alt-rock or metal, and yet their penchant for amalgamating sounds will continue to make nearly all the pheasants in the world wonder. I suggest approaching this as you would initially encounter a roadkill demon being revived by nicotine-loving egrets; confused and mildly disturbed at first by the overall character of the album, and later you grow incredibly fond of its existence.

Tomahawks mit gas is their best album until the oddfellows came out. I'll have to do my homework on that album next. This band fuckin rules...

More direct and less self-indulgent than the self-titled debut, Mit Gas is an excellent experimental rock record. Tracks like "Rape This Day" and "Mayday" flat-out rock, and elsewhere overt experimentation is abound ("Aktion 13F14"). "Capt Midnight" contains the best section of music this band has ever released, during its middle (when it hits, you'll know what part I'm talking about). Mit Gas still isn't perfect-- some sections are drawn out, not all the songs work, and it feels a little rushed-- but it's great fun.

Though pretty far from my favourite Mike Patton project, Tomahawk seems to give him the hard-rock outlet with a more straight up delivery that his career had been lacking. This isn't nearly as diverse as Faith No More, so don't listen to this disc with that in mind. Instead, try to take it for what it is: a hard rock band that just happens to have prolific frontman Mike Patton in it. No expectations, just solid tunes.
