Queen Carly complements one of the greatest pop albums of the 2010s with one hell of a pop EP. Dance-pop, synthpop, and electropop still constitute the majority of a soundscape tremendously supplemented by a top-notch production full of lil bouncy details. In and of themselves, the songs aren't all fantastic, but this still slaps.

For the most part, this is still bland naive, far more so than Emotion LP, but the EP also displays some hints of greatness to come. This is especially true of 2 with its 80's/Depeche Mode vibe in the instrumental which surprisingly work quite well with her bouncy vocals and summer verse. A surprise jam and quite honestly one of her best tracks so far. 6 shows an interesting chorus and an ok verse, but the instrumental is a bit lackluster. 7 is quite an ok romantic track but with a dumb verse. So yeah, she's showing promise, but for the rest, pretty much every track is super naive. Not much that is unpleasant though, except maybe 3 - the kind of track that just gets stuck in your head and drives you nuts. 1 sounds like a parody almost, but I guess it'd be nice in a club or something, and 8 while naive as ever has some cool sounds. If anything this made me excited for her next LP. 2.7

As if EMOTION itself wasn't good enough, Carly Rae Jepsen decides to release eight more tracks as B-Sides, most of which are outstanding. The songs here are obviously in the light of EMOTION and with any other artist would be a breakout album. In short: infectious vocals, hooks that are catchier than Discovery Channel fishing shows, beats that masterfully straddle the line of 80s and modern, sassy style and lyrics that focus on relationships but come off as relate-able and genuine. Just enough polish and plenty of character. Carly is the queen of pop, confirmed.

I quite enjoyed Emotion so I was eager to listen for more material from Ms. Jepsen especially after hearing that she had composed 250 songs throughout writing and recording that album. These B-sides fit perfectly with the sound and tone that she established on Emotion, unfortunately it's a little lackluster lyrically in some spots. Not that Emotion had amazing lyrics, but it never detracted from the music for me. Nevertheless it's a pleasant little addition to the 80s-tinged tones of Emotion.
