A companion piece to the 2015 short film of the same name, starring Robert De Niro, Ellis is a frozen, chilling piece of modern classical, being extremely minimal but stirring and engaging all the same. De Niro actually makes a great contribution here as well. His spoken word story of the ghosts of Ellis Island goes hand in hand with the cold, melancholy nature of the music, and ultimately results in a marvelous piece. It's quite a nice accomplishment to get all of this done in a mere twenty-five minutes, but with Frahm's minimalistic compositions and Woodkid's sparse, ambient drones, Ellis is an interesting and atmospheric work.
